I live in a rural area with plenty of room to roam, and so I didn't like the idea of walking my dog on a conventional leash. But I knew I needed some way to teach my puppy that I was the one in control - for his safety and for my peace of mind. Enter the Flexi Leash! From the moment I clipped it to his collar, he once again docilely followed me wherever I went, he easily learned the limits of its length (be aware that that first test of its limits by a running dog can be jarring to say the least! Definitely use some sort of verbal command to let your dog know when it's reaching the end of the leash to encourage it to slow down before the end is reached) , and no matter what fascinating item he's discovered to sniff, he immediately comes racing back to me the moment I call his name. It's as though something in his brain clicked when I snapped on this leash that reestablished which one of us was in control. Yet - because of the ease with which it pulls out and retracts, he still has an illusion of freedom. I even used it in the house for several weeks to establish that I was the one in control both inside and out.
My puppy weighed about 15 pounds when I got this leash. The weight was perfect then for this leash, and is perfect now at 25 pounds.Read more ›
Here's a few things about how I use mine. I bought it primarily for tracking. It's not legal for most competitive tracking events which require a 10 meter (~33 foot) long-line, but this 8 meter tape is more than long enough for practical purposes and you don't waste any time or your second hand line-handling. The tape, I guess it's nylon or polyester, seems to stay free of weeds and stickers unlike cotton lines that seem to grab everything. The line won't burn your hands either since you don't even touch the line.
I clip mine to a harness. I wouldn't like to clip it to the collar because the brake is not smooth. On a really soft dog, just the retractor can be perceived as a correction. But if the dog starts to take off, clicking the brake really slams them. With a hand-held line, there's no abrupt changeover from freespool to locked. The dog should have no problem slamming on their harness though. I just wouldn't do it with a collar.
A smoother brake would be a nice idea, but it's not clear it could be done without considerably more weight or expense. I imagine a lever type drag brake like on a big game fishing reel. It would be progressive but still able to stop the dog quickly.
The weight of this thing is a little high for a leash but not bad at all compared to a 30 foot biothane line.Read more ›

Excellent leash. This one replaces a 20-year old Flexi Leash, and is better because the leash is a tape rather than a thin rope.Published 4 days ago by J. McBride
