I wish they would stop trying to redesign this product. After 6 years of great performance, my last flexi-leash stopped retracting properly, so I ordered this more recent version of the same product. I don't know why they do this, but the "small dog" leash has a smaller handle than versions for larger dogs. The size of the handle is proportional to the size of the dog, which makes no sense. I have a small dog, but my hands are that of an average-sized adult male human. Therefore, I can't fit all 4 of my fingers comfortably in the handle. I could get a leash with a larger handle, but it would be designed for a larger dog. I doubt my min-pin could comfortably pull out a cord that has tensile strength designed for a 40 or 100 LB dog. It just makes no sense. The size of the handle grip and the size of the dog should not be relative. The previous small-dog version of this flexi-leash had a handle for an average-sized human hand, and was about 2-3 ft longer.

At the time I purchased this leash, I had a 4 month old puppy that I had had for about a month. The first month of our relationship - he was the perfect puppy! He came when called, trotted easily by my side, had little interest to roam. I thought we had the wonder dog. And then reality kicked in, as he became more comfortable with us and where we live, and he began testing the limits of our relationship. Whereas before he had been docile and cooperative, he suddenly realized he didn't HAVE to listen to us!

I live in a rural area with plenty of room to roam, and so I didn't like the idea of walking my dog on a conventional leash. But I knew I needed some way to teach my puppy that I was the one in control - for his safety and for my peace of mind. Enter the Flexi Leash! From the moment I clipped it to his collar, he once again docilely followed me wherever I went, he easily learned the limits of its length (be aware that that first test of its limits by a running dog can be jarring to say the least! Definitely use some sort of verbal command to let your dog know when it's reaching the end of the leash to encourage it to slow down before the end is reached) , and no matter what fascinating item he's discovered to sniff, he immediately comes racing back to me the moment I call his name. It's as though something in his brain clicked when I snapped on this leash that reestablished which one of us was in control. Yet - because of the ease with which it pulls out and retracts, he still has an illusion of freedom. I even used it in the house for several weeks to establish that I was the one in control both inside and out.

My puppy weighed about 15 pounds when I got this leash. The weight was perfect then for this leash, and is perfect now at 25 pounds.

The concept is simple enough... it pulls out and retracts and there's a slide-lock, like a measuring tape. The brilliant thing is I think this is well enough made it won't break after playing with it a few times. I haven't had it long enough to prove this point but Flexi has certainly been around that long and I haven't heard that they're rubbish.

Here's a few things about how I use mine. I bought it primarily for tracking. It's not legal for most competitive tracking events which require a 10 meter (~33 foot) long-line, but this 8 meter tape is more than long enough for practical purposes and you don't waste any time or your second hand line-handling. The tape, I guess it's nylon or polyester, seems to stay free of weeds and stickers unlike cotton lines that seem to grab everything. The line won't burn your hands either since you don't even touch the line.

I clip mine to a harness. I wouldn't like to clip it to the collar because the brake is not smooth. On a really soft dog, just the retractor can be perceived as a correction. But if the dog starts to take off, clicking the brake really slams them. With a hand-held line, there's no abrupt changeover from freespool to locked. The dog should have no problem slamming on their harness though. I just wouldn't do it with a collar.

A smoother brake would be a nice idea, but it's not clear it could be done without considerably more weight or expense. I imagine a lever type drag brake like on a big game fishing reel. It would be progressive but still able to stop the dog quickly.

The weight of this thing is a little high for a leash but not bad at all compared to a 30 foot biothane line.

I recently got a retractable leash at Walmart for $14 and I thought the concept was just perfect for my Lab. After a day, I could tell it was cheap and I saw why this one was so much more expensive. Since I really enjoyed the walks so much more, I decided to get this particular one due to the good reviews. I have to say that it's a very high quality product. It retracts very easily and smoothly. Both my Lab and I enjoy our daily walks so much more. Also, the fact that he can go 26 feet is feel like he's not on a leash, except without the worry of him running away or jumping on a stranger to smother him/her with kisses. Worth every penny.
