Book Description

December 1995 0963389602 978-0963389602 2nd
This is an approach to stretching unlike any that the reader has learned in the past, one that has been tested and proven successful by thousands of individuals and many organized teams.

The Flexibility Manual is not just another reference book for your sports library shelf. It is a truly functional guide and one that you will use again and again.

Because of its simplicity and conciseness, the Manual may be deceiving at first, but regular use will make the validity of its content apparent and its impact on your flexibility training will be considerable.

The Manual addresses varying levels of inflexibility for athletes and non-athletes of all ages. Step-by-step photographs and clear, sensible text, in a convenient user-friendly spiral binding, allow the Manual to be used successfully by everyone.

By integrating basic physiology with practical application, The Flexibility Manual cuts through the incomplete, potentially hazardous and ill-conceived procedures of stretching presented in much of the current literature and on the athletic field.

Dear Mr. Peters,

Since adopting the Sports Kinetics flexibility routine at the close of the 1979 season, Radnor soccer players have not experienced a single debilitating muscle strain or pull. I am certain that the emphasis placed on flexibility by our soccer coaching staff during the 1980 season played a significant role in enabling the Radnor soccer team to play 22 games and reach the finals of the Pennsylvania state tournament without sustaining a major muscle related injury.

We are grateful to you for introducing Radnor to the Sports Kinetics flexibility program and for working closely with those Radnor athletes who were in need of special attention.

Sincerely yours,
Robert C. Siemons, Head Coach, Radnor High School

Dear Howard & Jean Peters,

Thanks to you both for your outstanding flexibility program. We have used it for the last nine years, and still have not had a player miss a game due to a non-contact muscle related injury.

This is almost an entire decade, and we are still excited about the program. I have also used this program for the last five years with the Under-14 year old "Kicks", the Pennsylvania State Champions. This team has also not lost a player to a flexibility related injury.

Your program is a large part of the success of these teams, because the players are playing, executing range of motion techniques, and capable of withstanding contact in competition. I recommend this to everyone. Keep up the good work.

Your friend in soccer,
Sam Holt, Head Coach, Radnor High School

Dear Howard & Jean Peters,

Once again, I want to take this opportunity to express my personal and professional thanks to you both for your outstanding program and manual, The Flexibility Manual. I have been a soccer coach for thirty-one years and have used your program since 1980. I used it first with my Radnor High School soccer team and, more recently, with various FC DELCO club teams. In all this time, with all these teams, I have never had a player miss a game due to a non-contact muscle related injury.

Now in 1999, this is almost two decades free of the worry that comes from missing players on match day. Both Radnor, a major soccer program in southeast Pennsylvania, and FC DELCO, a national power in club soccer, owe much of their success to your efforts. Our players are able to execute at a high level because of their increased range of motion, and they are able to avoid muscle injuries that would occur with less flexibility.

I heartily recommend this program to anyone anxious to maintain and promote soccer fitness.

Your friend in soccer,
Sam Holt, Head Coach, Radnor High School

Dear Howard,

I want to thank you and your staff for their expert attention and fine services that they rendered this past season.

The team adopted your system of pre-training stretching and felt it was most worthwhile. We did not encounter any muscle pulls or strains during the 1981 season. The stretching program enabled us to enter both the daily training sessions and the games fully prepared & "warmed-up".

Again, thanks for your help. We look forward to a continued association with your clinic and its methods.

Sincerely,
Robert W. Robinson, Soccer Coach, Lower Merion High School

Dear Howard,

We want you to know how pleased we are with your flexibility program and how it has helped prevent injuries during the 1989 soccer season.

Since our introduction to your program in 1981, the Sports Kinetics stretching exercises have enabled the players to begin both the training sessions and the games in a good state of readiness.

Thanks for your help and support over the years.

Sincerely,
Robert W. Robinson, Soccer Coach, Lower Merion High School
National Soccer Coaches Association of America

Dear Howard and Jean,

We appreciate the help and expertise you have given the Shipley Crew in preparation for their 1990 racing season. Rowing demands rigorous training and conditioning. Every part of the body is engaged in the rowing motion. None of our student athletes who has followed your instructions and engaged in active stretching and warm-up prior to rowing, conditioning, running or weight lifting has experienced any injury.

Rowing is setting the example for many other sports at Shipley. All our athletes have benefited from your time and knowledge of proper stretching techniques.

Thanks again for your help in enhancing the student-athlete performance at Shipley.

Very truly yours,
John R. Galloway, Rowing Coach, The Shipley School

Dear Howard,

The Woodlynde School athletic program fields 10 varsity teams in soccer, cross-country, girls & boys tennis, basketball, wrestling, girls & boys tennis, basketball, wrestling, girls volleyball, field hockey, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse.

Woodlynde implemented the Flexibility Program over six years ago in physical education classes and at all levels of the athletic program.

Since that time we have not had a muscle injury that prevented an athlete from competing. In addition to preventing injuries, the program has improved the flexibility of our athletes which obviously enhances performance.

I whole heartedly recommend the Flexibility Program. It's complete, effective and easily understood by student-athletes. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Dave Shank, Director of Athletics -- Here's what people who use Sports Kinetics' "Active" Stretching have been saying!

Dear Sir,

I was very pleased with the results your flexibility routine provided the 1980 Roanoke Soccer team. We were fortunate to win our state division and participated in the state playoffs for the first time. Much of our success would seem to be due to a reduced number of injuries of the non-contact nature.

We participated in 18 matches during the season without having a player miss a game due to muscle strains or pulls. The only three players experiencing injuries of this nature that hampered practices were upper classmen who aggravated previous injuries from previous seasons. I find this fact to be of major significance because I have found that in the past, the players most susceptible to pulls and strains are freshmen.

I am very pleased with our experience with the Sports Kinetics flexibility routine and plan to use it next season.

Sincerely,
Rob Brewer, Varsity Soccer Coach

Dear Howard,
It is hard to believe that it has been 18 years since I started using your flexibility routine at Roanoke College. I am currently coaching the Women's Soccer team at Southwest Missouri State University and continue to have very few problems with non-contact muscle injuries.

We have not had players miss matches due to these types of injuries. The only strains or pulls that have caused players to miss practices have been limited to the pre-season period when we have multiple practice days. Typically these injuries happen to freshmen who do not yet know the program or are under prepared for the start of the season.

Howard, I am pleased to see your new manual and will put it to good use. As you get your manual on Basic Conditioning I would be very interested in taking a look at it and getting information on your flexibility training workshops.

Sincerely, Rob Brewer
Southwest Missouri State University, Head Women's Soccer Coach

Dear Howard,

The Flexibility Program you introduced to my soccer teams in 1988 is still working and succeeding today. Currently working with The University of Scranton as the Head Men's Soccer coach, I still make use of the exercises that you passed on to me. The flexibility exercises still make up our pre-practice and pre-game warm-ups. In a much more physical and demanding game at the collegiate level, muscle related injuries have been minimal.

The clarity of the manual helps remind me of the proper methods to use while I carry out the exercises, so as to gain maximum benefits. It is one thing to do something from memory and another to have the "picture" to help. Your new manual has done just that. I wish you continued success and the best of luck.

Sincerely, Paul Payne
Head Men's Soccer Coach

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Peters,

I would like to commend you on producing a simple stretching routine designed for anyone. I spoke to you personally about your stretching routine at the Boston Marathon Sports Expo. I unfortunately did not buy your book until later in the Spring after I had injured my lower back playing racquetball and my upper back shortly thereafter lifting a patient. At the time I thought I was in fairly good shape. I now try to do your exercises every day.

I am a nurse who works in an intensive care unit. I have recommended your book to patients, nurses, and doctors as well as others. As a matter of fact, my head nurse borrowed my book several weeks ago and is still using it. At this time I will be using my last request form to send a copy of your book to my brother in college. He is very physically active and will certainly benefit from your book.

Thanks again for producing a simple but valuable set of stretching exercises. Please send me more order forms so I may recommend your book to other people. I have become your unpaid salesman for your book!

Sincerely, K. T. Newton, Mass. -- Gratifying letters about our "Active" Stretching program continue to pour in! . . . From our mailbag:

THE FLEXIBILITY MANUAL represents the aim by the authors to address the problems with current flexibility/stretching programs and to present their ideas for achieving appropriate levels of flexibility safely and without potential for injury. This book is written for the general public and athlete. It provides some concepts for clinical discussion and consideration as well....Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone involved in fitness or athletic endeavors. It provides excellent instruction, clear photographs and is based on fundamentally sound principles. Also included in this book is a section titled the 'Instructor's Guide' for those wishing to lead a stretching group. It provides the appropriate verbal cueing to take a group through the entire flexibility program. -- ADVANCE for Physical Therapists 9/4/95

5.0 out of 5 stars My 12 Year Experience With The Program, December 20, 2003

This review is from: The Flexibility Manual (Physical Therapy Instructional) (Paperback)
I started "The Flexibility Manual" program when I was 70 years old and had been 'working out' three days a week for the previous eight years. I'm now 82 and continue the same workout routine including following the stretching regimen religeously. I can honestly say that I'm considerably more flexible now than when I started the program and expect to continue as long as I live. I feel it is an important adjunct to maintaining one's quality of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flexibility !!!, April 13, 2003
By
Ruth Senter (Jennersville, Pa. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Flexibility Manual (Physical Therapy Instructional) (Paperback)
I am a professional artist who must sustain prolonged static positions often resulting in muscular stiffness and discomfort. Having talked with the authors of this book three years ago, I saw how senible their method of active stretching is. I purchased the book and the video FLEXIBILITY SETS YOU FREE! which I use almost daily and particularly when things go awry. I like the personal control I have over what I am doing, understanding why force involved in other methods is counterproductive. Retaining my mobility, agility if you will, prompts my giving this method top ratings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flexibility improved, September 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Flexibility Manual (Physical Therapy Instructional) (Paperback)
I find this book and the video amazingly effective. The principles that Peters put forth break with traditional static stretching methods and that will jar some people. Their approach on the video is an almost Yoga-like set of exercises designed to smoothly transition from one to the next. If you are open to that, then the program will yield results.

I am not naturally flexible and using this program I was able to see tangible results, more than any static program yielded previously. I'd tried various martial art approaches but never without pain. I was never able to see lasting results.

I still use the stretches several times a week and I purchased this book nearly 7 years ago.
