Although any "best of" list is subjective by nature, this collection of color plates organizes many of the most popular flies in North America by category: trout, steelhead, salmon, bass, and saltwater. Individual fly descriptions include basic information for tyers, such as hook size, thread, tail, body, wings, and hackle. Don't expect to find esoteric local patterns for your favorite stream, but as a guide to the most widely accepted flies, this is a thorough resource.

Randy Stetzer's selection of flies for "The Best One Thousand" is clearly the fly pattern index of choice. The fly selection covers warmwater, saltwater, deerhair, dries, nymphs and streamers and even includes some fanciful unique flies. This book doesn't include flies that are localized creations...each pattern has been accepted world-wide.

Not much how - to in this book. this is the book you are looking for if you are an intermediate tier or thinking of going commercial. It is recognized WORLD WIDE and has many many many patterns and recipes.It won't bog you down with instruction on how to use or apply the material, but gives you a clear image of the fly, and lists what material is used for hook, body, tail, etc. A great suppliment to your tying desk if you would like to work on some professional looking flies. Certainly in the must have category

This is a nice collection of patterns. Don't necessarily agree with the author's selection but everyone has an opinion, don't they. Well put together, explanatory, easy to follow. Would recommend this as an adjunct to other books, wouldn't recommend this as a first purchase for beginning tiers.
