Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up Intended to introduce novices to all aspects of fly fishing, Arnosky's book is informative and fun to read. Arnosky takes readers through all aspects of the sport, from the nature of the insects on which the fish feed to catching the fish. A number of features separate this book from the average writings of this nature. Arnosky's text is full of anecdotes from his fishing outings which liven up the material. His background as a naturalist emerges in a number of instances. Probably the most outstanding feature is the numerous pencil drawings laced throughout the text, adeptly illuminating the author's points. Arnosky is careful to explain the technical jargon, but the absence of a glossary limits the book's reference value, as several terms which are explained once are then used repeatedly without explanation. This minor drawback aside, Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air is a quality work surpassing Du Broff's Still Water Fly Fishing for Young People (Kaye & Ward, 1983) in depth of coverage, quality of illustrations and reading enjoyment. Tom S. Hurlburt, Anoka County Library, Blaine, Minn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction and more to fly fishing, June 25, 2010
This review is from: Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air: A Personal Introduction to Fly Fishing (Paperback)
This book covers all the basics of fly fishing in an unintimidating way. It's a great book for the beginner and a good review for someone who has been away from fly fishing for awhile and wants a quick review. If you're looking for fancy glossy pictures, forget about this book. The pictures are hand drawn but done very nicely. Contains all the information one needs to get started, from basic aquatic entomology; to rods, reels, lines, and reading the water. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Well Organized Guide!, December 19, 2008
This review is from: Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air: A Personal Introduction to Fly Fishing (Paperback)
Jim Arnosky offers what is, next to the "Curtis Creek Manifesto," the best fundemental fly fishing guide for beginners and intermediates. More detailed than 'Curtis Creek,' Arnosky's "Flies in the Water, Fish in the Air" gives you all the information you need to start catching more fish the day after you read it. For more advanced fisherman, the book is good for a review or to keep on the shelf as a mentoring tool for younger "up-n-coming" fly fisher.
