An Excellent Collection,
By c5 (Louisiana, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
Of the 33 stories in this book, I don't think there was one that I didn't like for one reason or another. I'm generally not a big fan of superhero comics or of those that try too hard to be dark and edgy, and this is a nice alternative. I got a strong impression that the creators of the comics in this book just had fun and really put themselves into their work. The art styles are quite varied and impressive. Some of the stories are funny, some emotional, and some just inspiring artistically. The stories range from one page to around 20.
Although the book is large (and a great bargain at the Amazon price), it's a quick read. But this isn't a bad thing--I felt that I more than got my money's worth. I'll be looking for other work by some of these artists and ordering the first volume. I hope the Flight series continues.

First class art work, a style for everyone.,

I was intrigued by the cover in the book store so I decided to pick it up. Wow, was I ever impressed. I used to be into comic books and art in general while in high school, but never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned what the medium would become. Yes, I am getting old and no, I haven't been keeping up with comics. So, there may be better out there but not with so many different styles: One in pastel, one comp. generated, another in oils, and even a more traditional pen and ink section (all executed exquisitely).
If you are interested in finding out what can be accomplished stylistically and artistically in the world of graphic novels look no further. I can't wait to find volume two.

Warm and fuzzy without being nauseating,
By Craven Rock (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
I picked up "Flight Volume Two" at my library because it looked kind of cool. As soon as I started reading it I was totally absorbed and had to put it down on purpose in order to save some for later. The stories are kind of fairy tale-like, sweet and refreshing but not cheesy and nauseating. This isn't usually my thing, I guess I can be sort of grounded and my literary tastes reflect that. However, this book definately transcends that and appeals to the childlike, unjaded dreamer in me. Yeah, read it!
Read especially if your sad or grumpy.

First Time Buyer of a Graphic/Comic Book,
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
After discovering Kazu Kibuishi's comic, Copper, I found out that there was a book he was editing called Flight and that the second volume was coming out soon. About six months later I was at a Barnes and Noble and I remembered that they were distributing the Flight books. I picked one up, my first graphic book of anything I've ever bought, and I love it. Its a joy to see stories this interesting with art so beautiful. The art is the main reason I bought it because, but the stories stand on their own. Kazu's own entry in the book is a rather warming tale involving a young girl and boy who are facing seperation. Other stories involve cities built on hovering tram systems, planes, trains (in beautiful colored pencil, no less), and bicycles. Expect monsters, stories without dialogue, robots, and Flight.
Beautiful and meaningful, I recommend this book to anyone who loves comics and maybe grew up with the art of Bill Watersons' Calvin and Hobbes, as well as anyone who has ever secretly wished that books for adults had vibrant illustrations to enjoy along with the text.

Flight Magic,
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
This book can be considered a magical addition to the Flight comics series. As you open the book its as if you are taken to a whole new world in which you are lifted up off your feet over the world and to new hights of imagination.

NICE read, EXCEPT for...,
By Jim S. (Clovis, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
Hats off to the many great stories by the many great artists in this book. There are indeed many talented people still roaming this planet! EXCEPT for the few artists who obviously paid someone or had a strong connection w/ an Image Comics employee to get their pitiful stories into Flight, Vol. 2.
Those that left a sour lingering taste in my mouth are... Don Hertzfeldt's stick figures accompanied by a very weak attempt at a story. Calling Hertzfeldt's work 'amateurish' would be very kind indeed. Next we have Hope Larson's 'Weather Vain'. All I can say is, "PURE GARBAGE!" What gives? Put your obvious illustrative talents to better use. This junk was immediately followed by Becky Cloonan's 'Heads Up'. Same advice that I gave to Ms. Larson applies here. What a waste of seventeen pages and the editor/publisher had the nerve to put these stories back to back. WOW! Lastly, who wants to try and explain to me what was going on in Matthew Woodson's 'Tendergrass'? BIZARRE to say the least. Oh well, maybe it's just me. Continued success to those talented artists, story writers, letterers and color artists whose work belonged in this wonderful and reccommended read. Cheers!!

Flight 2 review,

This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
When my copies (I got 2&3) arrived, the first thing I noticed was the sheer size of the volumes. They are much thicker than I expected, but then again it is chock full of images. The short stories in this run the gamut when it comes to styles and tone. I really enjoyed first just scanning through the volume just LOOKing at the imagery. Once I sat down to read the stories, I really couldn't stop. Well, I could have, but I didn't really want to. Each story has a flavor, a texture, and you can't quite help but enjoy them and want more. As for the art created for this volume- by variety and quality, they're inspiring. I'm glad I got at least two volumes at once. I would recommend this book!

Flight #2 is a great comics anthology that avoids the usual boring comic book cliches. There is great art here as well as intriguing story telling.
For years the comics industry has claimed that comics are for adults, too, yet have served up a steady stream of embarrassing teenage sexual and power fantasies. With the advent of books like "Flight" the promise of publishers actually fostering creative stories for intelligent adults is at least partially fullfilled. I hope they continue.

the perfect anthology- a fluid mix of western art and manga combines with great literature and artistry to form a priceless buy.,
This review is from: Flight Volume 2 (Paperback)
My first experience with the "Flight" series by Image Comics was in Volume 1, where I must say that I was overwhelmed by the mastery shown by each of the artists/writers in their respective "graphic short stories". In truth, their hasn't been anything quite like this in the history of graphic novels (or anthologies). This book succeeds where others have failed by providing an almalgam of varying flavors from each artist, and thus giving the reader a complete, and satisfying experience. I think that Flight Volume 2 was, in effect, much better than Flight Volume 1, in its ability to delve deeper into conflictions in life, while tying in the theme of flight, in its literal and metaphorical sense. The only reservations I have with Vol. 2 is that it is devoid of the superlative artistry of Chris Apelhans (besides the cover). His work in Vol. 1 was my personal favorite. Either way, whether one wishes to buy Vol. 1 or 2 of the Flight Series, it will be a worthy purchase. If wishing for both, I would suggest reading Vol. 1 with Vol. 2 in succession, as the two in their respective orders better feed off the particular characteristics inherent in the two of them. P.S. Kazu Kibuishi is the editor of the Flight series Amazon.com, give him the credit of authoring.
