Editorial Reviews

The latest southern rap duo Playaz Circle debuted their disc, Supply & Demand in 2007, easily one of the most anticipated debuts in years. Signed to the groundbreaking Disturbing tha Peace label, founded by multi-platinum and Grammy winning artist and actor Ludacris and Disturbing Tha Peace CEO Chaka Zulu, these Georgia boys continue to make noise with their current hit "Stupid" featuring OJ Da Juiceman from their sophomore album "Flight 360: The Takeoff." "We come from the era when hip-hop really had substance," Tity Boy says. "We were students of artists like NWA, Too Short and Big Daddy Kane. We knew all of that music." Growing-up in the College Park section of Atlanta at a time when hometown groups like Goodie Mob and Outkast were pioneering a southern hip-hop sensibility, the Playaz Circle rap duo Tity Boy and Dolla were boyhood friends before either had ever busted a rhyme. Where we come from, it's all about hot cars and hot chicks. Practicing their skills in the basement of a neighborhood friend or freestyling on the bus, Tity and Dolla were both good students when they attended High School. "These kids today act like its cool to be dumb, but I love going to school. We both graduated, which, where we come from, is a miracle considering there is a huge dropout rate. Kids need to understand, you need school sense as much as street sense." Dolla and Tity recorded their first DTP track "Playpen is the Statepen" for DTP's Golden Grain compilation. "Luda thought I was going to do a song by myself," says Tity Boy. When he heard me and Dolla rapping together (along with their DJ Black Bill Gates), he said, `Damn, ya'll sound good together.' From that moment, it was on." Alluding at their gangster past, the sinister track "Outlaw" sounds like a Black heavy metal soundtrack to an unmade blaxploitation flick. Hard as hell with soaring horns and banging bass, Playaz Circle has no problem bringing a rock `n' roll feeling without letting go of their funky ways. Playaz Circle proves that there is little competition when it comes to being the hottest crew from the south. "On our songs, we just strive to make timeless songs that make you feel good," says Tity Boy. There is no argument; Playaz Circle has achieved that goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Albums of The Year!! Everybody is SLEEPING!!!, October 29, 2009
This review is from: Flight 360: the Takeoff (Audio CD)
Playaz Circle is a duo that consists of Dolla & Tity Boi. Yes they are those Duffle Bag Boys but I think they have been unfairly grouped in with the artists with no talent. Their first album SUPPLY & DEMAND surprised me because I was also like "oh those Duffle Bag Boys? I'll pass" but when I heard the album I was amazed at how good it was. That was undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of 2007. Their sophomore album FLIGHT 360: THE TAKEOFF is even better than their debut.

Both Tity Boi and Dolla can actually rap. Tity Boi is the one with the most talent in my opinion but Dolla is no slouch. Sonically this is one of the best produced albums of the year and is handled by no name up & comers. That's quite a feat in todays rap world where the super producer still exists. They get meaningful and significant contributions from their guests Bobby Valentino, Lil Wayne, Young Dro, Ludacris, Cee Lo Green (YES THAT Cee Lo Green from the GOODIE MOB), and Raekwon (yes the Chef from the Wu Tang Clan).

The songs follow the "fly" theme. Turbulence, Look What I Got, Stupid, Yeah We Gettin Rich, Can't Remember, Big Dawg, Weight Droppin are all excellent songs. The entire album is quality but if I had to pick a low point it's probably DJ KNOW ME ft. Young Dro but it's not a bad song at all. The best song is as you probably figured the Cee-Lo collaboration GHETTO which effectively "lands" the album. The duo prove that they are more than flossing and being "fly" and Cee-Lo turns in an amazing performance on the chorus. Spoken word artist Sunni Patterson also puts in meaningful work.

Flight 360 is one of the better albums of the year, no doubt about it but it's just a shame that the album is already forgotten even after only being out a little over a month. It's a gem and I fully recommend the album.
