After all these years Lone Wolf is still one of my favorites,
By
This review is from: Flight from the Dark (Lone Wolf, Book 1) (Paperback)
Gorwing up in the 80's and early 90's I had always been a fan of game books like Choose your own adventure, Advanced Dungeons, interplanetary spy etc. I first saw the Lone wolf books in a 7th grade book fair and my friend convinced me to buy one. I bought Lone Wolf 8: The Jungle of Horrors. After completing that book I was hoooked. I set out to purchase more books from this series, because I had very little money at the time, I only managed to add the following to my collection:Lone Wolf 1: Flight from the dark Lone Wolf 3: Caverns of Kalte Lone Wolf 5: Shadow on the Sand Lone wolf 10: The Dungeons of Torgar Lone wolf 13: The Plague Lords of Reul Lone wolf 15: The Dark Crusade Lone wolf 16: The Legacy of Vashna Soon after I really started getting into these books they stopped publishing them. Over the years the books I did have were misplaced. I am a lot older now and recently had a bit of nostalgia and decided to hunt down books 1 - 16 because I thought 16 was the last Lone wolf book. I soon found out that Dever actually had 20 books published in the U.S. I now have books 1 - 19 still searching for that elusive #20. I wasnt planning on reading them, I just wanted to collect them. But after deciding to read Book #1 again I was hooked all over again, I am now on book 8 and plan to complete the entire series whenever I can get Lone wolf 20. In a world dominated by video games and TV, kids these days never seem to want to read anymore. When I was growing up, video games systems were just starting to come out and were many times too expensive for my parents to afford. Reading books and playing outside were my only forms of entertainment and I think it has done me well in the long run. Books will probally never be a form of entertainment for young kids these days as it was for people growing up in my generation. Who knows one day, books will probally be completely phased out. What a shame. I just wish more kids these days would see that reading can be fun, entertaining and educational at the same time as Joe Dever proved that to me.

I was given this book fifteen years ago and have continued to collect all twenty since then, and I'm still looking forward to more. I believe this book can open doors of creativity and imagination for a child's mind, as it did for me.

I found this book/series while searching for Choose Your Own Adventure type books. I've never played Dungeons & Dragons, have always wanted to, but no one to play with. The Lone Wolf series is a wonderful substitue for D&D to play solo. I wasn't sure what I'd get or how much I'd enjoy this book once I received it. I'm glad I purchased this book. It was great fun, only took me a couple times to get the hang of combat and calculating the points. It's quite a change from video game RPGs which I'm extremley familiar with. If you are looking for a great RPG solo book to get you started this is the book for you. It's written for teens/kids so it's easy to read and easy to get into but it does have depth. I've died 6 times in my quest and lived 2 times. I'm very eager to get the second book in the Lone Wolf series and further my adventure. There aren't many solo RPG books, it was popular in the 80s. Books like this are a gem. If you have it, keep it, if you don't have it get it. It passes the time, it's fun, it's an adventure.

A series of epic porportions! Start the journey here.,

I started this series probably 15 years ago, maybe more. I remember being so wrapped up in this interactive adventure that I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next installment. Well, while cleaning off my shelves a few days ago I stumbled across these gems and I tell you, I got overwhelmed with the same feelings. You are Lone Wolf, the last of the Kai Warriors in the land of Sommerlund. Throughout your adventures (the are 28 books and 4 "World of Lone Wolf" books) you will face monsters big and small, wizards, magicians, puzzles, riddles, and everything else your imagination can think of. This book is just like your standard "Choose Your Own Adventure" book except that it is more interactive. Not only do you choose your path, but you also choose your skills, equipment, and whether or not you want to battle enemies. This book employs an interesting combat system in which you pick a number from the "Random Number Table" at the end of the book by closing your eyes and poking the page with your eraser (see my shared photo). I highly recommend getting ahold of a 10-sided die to use instead, because after a few books one can learn where the higher number areas are. I had the first 15 books of the series when I was younger and now that I've reread them, I am scrounging ebay and used Amazon books to locate the next ones. Unfortunately all of these books are out of print. If you are looking for these books, I highly recommend getting the UK editions of books 12-20 because the US editions are abridged and are missing huge sections. Additionally, there are many "broken links" since they were edited so when it says to turn to page XX it takes you to the wrong place. Also, good luck finding books 21-28 as they were ONLY printed in the UK. They are very rare and if you have them, hold on to them! Finally, Joe Dever has authorized the free distribution and licensing of his Lone Wolf series which are available online. This resource has the unabridged editions which makes it great. I will not give out the URL as part of the reviewers agreement but with a little searching you should be able to find it. However, I am still a fan of reading the paper version, and look forward to sharing this epic series with my children, should I ever have any.

GREAT! What else can I say?,

These books are the best of the role-playing world. They are colorful, with rich backgrounds and detailed characters, and have a new exciting plot every time. It took me several years of searching used book stores, but I found 1-20. I seriously hope Joe Dever begins printing in the U.S. again.

A Great Starter Book of the Lone Wolf Series!,

This review is from: Flight from the Dark (Lone Wolf, Book 1) (Paperback)
When I first saw this book in a Barnes + Noble store, I immediately got hooked. I loved the idea of getting items and taking different paths to get to accomplish my goals. The story is amazing with perils waiting around every turn. You never know when a ferocious Kraan might swoop down on you, or the floor fall right from under your feet! This book really does things right. I have books 1, 2, 4, and 5. I would like to get the whole series, but it seems that the books are out of stock everywhere. I hope the author decides to put all his books back in stock, because we adventurers can't wait for more Lone Wolf!

Superb fantasy RPG book series!,
By Bart Menden "Fan of Batman" (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flight from the Dark (Lone Wolf, Book 1) (Paperback)
The Lone Wolf series is an advance from "choose your own adventure" as it allows you to not only choose multiple paths throughout a quest but also have your own profile. You pick weapons and food and acquire wounds and wins along the way. Most of it is done by a points system so have your pencil ready! The journey is fun and though the books are more geared for younger ages, I still enjoy playing/reading them now and again. They are challenging because they make you think and ponder your decisions, for the consequences could mean the difference between you continuing onward with the fun, fictional tales that are before you, or falling to your fate via monster, sword, magic, or spear! Highly Recommended!

A great start to a great series,

This is a great book, anyone who says it isn't is wrong. The way the book series allows you to interact with it leads to a more interesting twist of an otherwise used type of reading. Not only that, but helping other people get through it is an even better aspect

Greatest role playing book series EVER,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flight from the Dark (Lone Wolf, Book 1) (Paperback)
I've read a lot of gaming books, and I must say that Lone Wolf is the best series of all time. It allows for character advancement and there is a cohesive story that carries throughout the series. It keeps you excited and I must say that I was happy when I had an opportunity to use an item in the ninth book that I had gotten in the first! The fighting is decently realistic and the skill development carries from one book to the next. Even the artwork is great. A choose your own adventure book is never as good as real honest role-playing, but if you're going to read one, this is it. I'd rate it an eleven if they let me.
