Book Description

Near the end of August 1939, a nineteen-year-old rabbinical student by the name of Samuel Cywiak returned home to Wyszków, Poland to visit his family for the high holidays; the most solemn and important period in the Jewish calendar. Days later Germany invaded Poland, initiating the start of World War II. Shortly after the occupation of Wyszków, the Nazis marched Samuel and his father, along with a group of nearly seventy teachers and leaders from their shtetl, into the woods across from the Bug River. Thanks to the actions of his father, Samuel was the sole survivor of a mass execution. This event initiated his “flight” to flee the Nazis and reunite with the rest of his family.

Rabbi Samuel Cywiak’s Holocaust memoir, “Flight From Fear,” chronicles the six years during World War II where, not only did he survive the wraths of both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin and witness many horrors throughout Europe, but he was ordained a rabbi, became a husband and father, and witnessed and experienced many miracles.

He was ordained by Rabbi Chaim ben Zion Notealevitz in New York and later certified fit in matters of Jewish legal questions by the great Moshe Feinstein. His cousin, Rabbi Shlomo Goren, was Chief Rabbi of Israel for three terms from 1973 to 1983. Rabbi Cywiak was honored by former President of Venezuela, Carlos Andres Perez, for community service and has had a distinguished career as an Orthodox Rabbi, mohel, and cantor for over sixty years now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible October 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was invited to a Spaghetti Dinner one evening at The Sons of Israel Synagogue in St. Augustine. I went with my friend and teacher, Max Jaffe. While Max and I were dining, Rabbi Samuel Cywiak saw me and approached. Being a Gentile, I was not a common sight in the Synagogue and the Rabbi did not know me. I had a full beard at the time and, of course was wearing the prayer cap that is required for men in the Synagogue.

He asked me if I were a visiting Rabbi. Before I could answer, Max starting laughing so hard he could hardly get out the words, "But he's not even Jewish," at about the same time as I answered "no. I am not a Rabbi."

Rabbi Samuel didn't hear what Max had said, only my answer. He then began to admonish me for not attending Synagogue more regularly. Max nearly fell off his chair laughing

That was the night I began to get to know a man who is probably among the bravest of us and certainly a towering example of dogged adherence to the tenets of his faith. I just finished reading his book, Flight From Fear. In the word pictures he provided, I watched him leave the ditch where he hid among the corpses of his family till the murderers left. Then he walked resolutely back into the mouth of the lion to try to rescue his sister and mother. This man, after his family was stripped of everything including their lives, by the Nazi SS, refused to join the civilian resistance - the Partisans - focused on fighting back, because he did not believe in killing.

I have not witnessed a work of art with so many of my own tears since the movie, Schindler's List. Such a book is a fresh reminder that to forget these atrocities is to invite their return. To marginalize the mass murders and the blind hatred that made them possible is to conceal the danger that it could happen again. Rabbi Cywiak's book can't be said to reopen a wound. That wound is still bleeding and will continue to bleed for many generations.

Read it. Tell your friends to read it. Lest we forget. Lest we forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Halocaust survival story September 27, 2011
Format:Paperback
I just finished reading Flight from Fear. This is a very readable book mostly describing Rabbi Cywiak's amazing survival of the Nazi's drive to wipe out the Jewish people during WWII. Starting with the German invasion of Poland in September of 1939, the Rabbi describes the horrors of a Jew staying one step ahead of the Nazi's and the miracles he encountered as he survived the exhausting flight from Poland to Lithuania to Russia. He vividly details the miraculous events which kept him from losing his life on one hand and reaffirmed the role God had in assuring his existence on the other.
This book gives yet another intimate look at the Holocaust and fills in some of the gaps not covered by other books.
I recommend this book to anyone looking to learn about his Jewish or Polish heritage during WWII. Rabbi Cywiak also includes some critical insights and thoughts about various rabbinical thinking and Christian thinking.
Rabbi Cywiak and Jeff Swetsky have created a very readable, thought provoking and dramatic literary work that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of WWII, Judaism, and incredible survival. An intense, informative and enjoyable read.
I will take a copy of this book to the local synagogue to include in their library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have we learned anything from the past? July 6, 2011
By Spemse
Format:Paperback
This journey from near death until the present day vision of the Rabbi pictured with his lovely grandchildren, makes one reflect on the millions of young children who would never be born because of the events during Hitler's reign. Everyone should read this wonderfully written, yet dramatic story of Rabbi Cywiak's amazing life and reflect on present day events in the middle east. Have we really learned any lessons?
