5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Terror & Triumph
This is my favorite of Cooney's novels, and my students(grades 6th - 8th) love it as well. Cooney places her characters in the most traumatic situations(in this book, a plane crash) and then Mrs. Cooney reminds us, as the drama unfolds, that these are still young adults with the usual teen years' concerns. Kids love this book because it holds the suspense and...

Flight #116 is Down is an extremely well done adventure intertwined with everyday life stories. Cooney does an excellent job displaying the fears and tragedies of an accident without putting in a lot of unnecessary gore. 5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Terror & Triumph, February 13, 2000
Kids love this book because it holds the suspense and contains some (decently depictedt); "blood & guts"; yet it keeps its listeners' attention more through the audience's identification with the book's characters. The only "challenge" with this book and young readers is the continuous switch in point of views. Cooney's style allows the reader to know the fears, thoughts, and also flaws of all these individuals brought together by this tragedy. Much like it would be in a crisis situation, all these points of views are going at once. I found that reading this book out loud was more effective with my overall class of diverse readers. I would love to hear from other teachers especially who have read this book with their students. P.S. - This book is so realistic that if I had experienced a plane crash...I don't think I could read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The very very special review, by Seth Holdridge, May 27, 2005
When I first saw the cover of the book, I thought that this was a book for 5th graders. But then I started to read the book and I realized that this book was more apporpriate for 7th and 8th graders. The book that I read is about a girl who is trying to find her true self. Her whole life, nobody had believed in her, and she wanted some way to prove to everyone, that she isn't useless. At the same time, there is a guy named patrick. Patrick is a character who wants something to happen, because he wants to prove to himself that he can come through in a stressful situation. But the problem is, is that Patrick lives in a small town where nothing happens. The other character that makes you think is Daniel. In the beginning he is very angry at his parents. But a certain event in the book makes Daniel think of the way he has been treating his parents, and that makes him change his mind about his parents. In this book, we learn that proving yourself is a constent theme that reoccurs in the book. This book has taught me that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. I like the book just because it taught me that lesson. But that's not the only reason I like it, I also like it because in the book, the action just went throughout the book, and didn't end until the book ended.

Flight 116 Is Down is the best book ever!! I am an extremely avid reader, and this is the only book that I can read front to back and 2 minutes after reading the last page start it all over!! I love this book because it's soooooooo descripitive!! Most kids that hate to read and are forced to for school read the first chapter and the last chapter. This is impossible with her books!!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I've ever read, August 24, 2002
A Kid's Review
I've always been into planes and plane crashes, and when I saw Flight #116 is down, just by looking at it I knew it was a great book. When I started reading, I got more interested in the peoples stories then in the plane, how Patrick wants so much for something excitingto happen in his life, how Hiedi dosen't do very well in school and how her life is kinda blah, and Daniels parents have split up, and life dosen't really matter to him anymore, and how his brother, Tuck, isn't the same without thier parents being together, and how Teddie worries too much about things( she's only 5 ), and how the snotty Darienne is wrapped up with her own silly life, and can't(and won't)care about anything else, and Carly just wants to do something with her life. All of these things are reality, and the book taught me so much of how life can be crucial, and give gifts. In other words, it has its ups and downs. And when the plane crashed, it gave a wonderful view of how life has bravery and emmotions. Its sad but I think what Caroline B. Cooney is trying to tell people, and not only entertain them, but to tell them that this is reality. How a plane crash can do so much to a persons life, when there are people dying out there in that world, and all people can think about is themselves. I've got to hand it to her, she's a wonderful author.

4.0 out of 5 stars wowza, January 19, 2001

Because ot the title of the book, you can tell that it's about a plane crash. This book is non-stop action. It goes back and forth. One minute you're reading about a little girl named Teddie who is flying to her parents alone. The next minute you're reading about a twin named Carly who is flying home to her twin. And all of a sudden the plane is crashing. One of the main character is Heidi. She is the owner of the house where the plane crashes. She finds herself in a sitution in which were she either has to run home and call for help or go help some of the vitims. Does she make the right choice or does she make the wrong one? Read the book if you want to find out.

I really liked this book because it did not just focus on one character. It has a lot of different characters. This book made me think what I would do in this situation. It actually made me feel like I was right next to the characters when this happened. But the thing I really liked about this book was that it was based in minutes. Like at 12:00 you're next to a girl talking about a quater taped to her hand and at the same time in a different paragraph a girl is talking about her twin sister. You will love the suspence of this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flight #116 is Down by Caroline B. Cooney, April 12, 2002
A Kid's Review
Flight #116 is Down is an extremely well done adventure intertwined with everyday life stories. Cooney does an excellent job displaying the fears and tragedies of an accident without putting in a lot of unnecessary gore. As you read it you will ride on a roller coaster of emotions and your attention will be held captive until the exhausting finish, making this book a classic page-turner. While indulging yourself into the pages you will meet many characters full of personality and life. Each has their own story and is in some way related to the plane in this book, "Flight #116." Their lives however come together when a 747 comes crashing down onto a large estate. Then all at once everyone's life seems to play a part in the survival of the passengers aboard the plane. Read carefully as you learn just how devastating an accident like this can be. Believe me, it will take your breath away.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Dove House Crash, December 10, 2001
By A Customer
A Review by Kelsey
This story, as you can tell by the title, is about an airplane crash. Heidi is a normal girl who lives in the small town of Nearing River. Her parents are constantly away on business, leaving her with Mrs. Camp, the housemaid. Heidi and her family live on a huge estate several miles outside of town. Patrick also lives in Nearing River and goes to the same school as Heidi, but they do not know each other. He is an EMT for the local fire dept. and is tired of never receiving a real adrenaline rush emergency. One night an event will happen that will change both Heidi's and Patrick's lives forever. Patrick finally receives his first real emergency when Flight #116 had problems and decided to crash in her backyard!

In this book I didn't like the way that Caroline wrote it. She wrote this book in both chapters and time intervals. For example when the plane is crashing she wrote - 5:41 P.M. Heidi looked up into the sky to see it turning red and a deafening noise filling the air. This method I liked a lot because it gave you a chance to realize how much can happen within a couple a minutes or how little could happen in an hour. Clooney would also tell the story through about 6 different characters in the book. She would sometimes be focusing on Patrick and then all of a sudden you are reading about what it's like to be on the actual plane. This way was not bad; it would sometimes be just a little confusing. I did, however, really enjoy this story. Even though it was written pretty elementary, I liked the plot and complications of it. This book was exciting and even suspenseful at times. I just wanted to keep reading. When I finished I still wanted more!

Even though this book is mainly about a plane crashing, it is also a little more. People who would not normally associate with one another and work together do. Friendships are made and lives are changed as the whole entire town of Nearing River responds to this incident. I recommend it for readers who like suspense and surprising outcomes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! shouldn't miss this one!, March 2, 2006
By
I started reading this book last sunday, and I finished it by Monday evening. This book really touched me, it had good combination of emotion and thrill. It was a story about 16 year old Heidi and a drastic day that changed her life. What would you do if an airplane crashed in your backyard? Heidi had to face this question as she is sitting alone one saturday night feeling sorry for herself. A jumbo jet crashes into the woods behind her house. Heidi discovers that she has depths of strength and valor that she didn't know about. She along with 17 years old Patrick, and other volunteer workers, struggles to save the lives of passengers and crew of flight #116. This book is packed with action and emotion which makes it a powerful combination for readers.

This book was awesome , it was very real seeming. I would have totally flipped out if a plane landed in my back yard .. I wouldn't know what to do , But the main character in this book did , she may have paused for a minute , but she got right with it .. can you imagine how it would feel having strangers in your house , and your parents were not home . And losing your family and not being aware of it . once again this book was truly awesome , and I recommend everyone read it . Thank You
