Book Description

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Schaub is credited as author of the two long tales (comprising more than 370 of the 384 pages) that, framed by a short introduction and afterword, make up this sequel to Storms of Victory, co-written by Nebula Grandmaster Norton and Griffin. In "Exile," the inhabitants of Witch World continue to cope with the aftermath of the catastrophic Turning of the first book. Nolar, a young woman disfigured by a facial birthmark and cast out of her family, is tutored by a brilliant scholar and comes late to her psychic powers. She and Duratan, one of the Witches nearly destroyed during the earlier Turning, search for a healing power and uncover traces of an ancient evil about to be set loose again. The second offering, "Falcon Hope," takes up the tale of Holdlady Una of Seakeep and the mercenary leader, Tarlach the Falconer, who seeks a new start for his people and their avian bond-mates, wandering homeless for many years and threatened with extinction. This addition to the new Witch World series surpasses its acclaimed predecessor; engaging protagonists, vivid writing and thoughtful development offer excellent entertainment.

About the Author

For well over a half century, Andre Norton has been one of the most popular science fiction and fantasy authors in the world. Since her first SF novels were published in the 1940s, her adventure SF has enthralled readers young and old. With series such as Time Traders, Solar Queen, Forerunner, Beast Master, Crosstime, and Janus, as well as many stand-alone novels, her tales of action and adventure throughout the galaxy have drawn countless readers to science fiction.

Her fantasy, including the best-selling Witch World series, her "Magic" series, and many other unrelated novels, has been popular with readers for decades. Lauded as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America, she is the recipient of a Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention. Not only have her books been enormously popular; she also has inspired several generations of SF and fantasy writers, especially many talented women writers who have followed in her footsteps. In the past two decades she has worked with other writers on a number of novels. Most notable among these are collaborations with Mercedes Lackey, the Halfblood Chronicles, as well as collaborations with A.C. Crispin (in the Witch World series) and Sherwood Smith (in the Time Traders and Solar Queen series). An Ohio native, Ms. Norton lived for a number of years in Winter Park, Florida, and now makes her home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she continues to write, and presides over High Hallack, a writers' resource and retreat.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Turning: a sub-series of Witch World, November 23, 2000
This book is the second in the mini-saga of Andre Norton's Witch World, called The Turning. It is interesting and enjoyable, with the usual evil dangers and magic. The second story in the book would be hard to really understand, though, without reading the first book before it, Storms of Victory. Fantasy readers and non-fantasy readers will enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read for all fans of the genre!, March 9, 1998
These stories are well rounded and interesting. They bring new ideas and flavor to the Witch World saga. Each book set here, whether by Ms. Norton personally, or a collaboration with another, "fleshes out" the place and the times. They don't have to appeal to everyone. That is one of the refreshing strongpoints to the series. She is not afraid to see new ideas or changes to the world she has created here. Just one more reason she is who she is.
