More About the Author

I was born in a small English village . . .
Actually, no. I was born in Hollywood, California, and have lived in Southern California most of my life. My parents were both teachers, so I grew up in a house filled with books and music. Also animals, and lots of relatives.
My grandmother taught me to read before I went to school. I can't remember a time I wasn't reading. We read everything. Comic books, the backs of cereal boxes, and lots of books. She also taught me to keep a journal from the time I was nine, so the pathway from my brain to a pen was developed early.
I never thought of being a writer. My uncle published a biography of Mozart. My father, a history professor, published three textbooks. As a child, I imagined that writers were alone at their desks, always isolated. They also got depressed when the rejections arrived. Not what I wanted to do for a living!
My parents always encouraged me to dream. Nothing was seen as out of reach, and a career in the arts was respected. When my father died two months before I graduated from college, I started writing a novel. It was my way of trying to find order in chaos and pain. Six years after I started, I published that novel, and went on to write a few dozen more.
I was so wrong about the writing life. You're never alone, you're surrounded by your characters, always thinking about them, laughing and cheering them on or crying when they face heartbreak. And as for the rejections? The truth is that writing is not for the faint hearted. You need a certain toughness which was hard for me to learn. But my Dad used to always say, the way to get Elda to do something is to tell her she can't. (Works like a charm.)
I've been a writer for many years now, and I can't think of a better way to live my life. My goal was always to give a reader a bit of the pleasure that countless authors have given me, and I hope I've done that.

5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect escape read, October 7, 2004
This review is from: The Fling (Paperback)
This is a book you will love to read again and again. The plot is predictable, yet fun--Kate is helping Patti get over Roger by going to Hawaii on what would have been the honeymoon. On the plane they meet Cherry, who becomes their friend, and they all end up at this beautiful resort in Maui (you feel like you are there too). Then Kate meets Jack, who she thinks is a bartender at the resort. This is very entertaining for the reader, because we know Jack's real identity, and we also know that sooner or later he'll have to tell her the truth. It's an easy read that will have you hooked until the end. It has its funny moments (at one point Jack thinks his dad has a crush on Kate) and romantic moments (candlelight picnic near the pools or sunrise at the volcano). This book will help you appreciate those you love and keep you from taking your relatives and loved ones for granted. I highly recommend The Fling to anyone who wants a romance novel that's also a perfect escape vacation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading here!, October 1, 2002

...As one couple handles romantic dilemas, Patti and Cherry work to find their places in life and make their dreams come true. Whether or not they involve romance remains to be seen (hopefully in future books!)

**** This lively, quick paced and humorous novel will appeal to a broad spectrum of fans. There is a strong "chick lit" element focusing on the women and their relationships, yet the romance is in no way lessened by this. Jack is in no way a beta male, as is usually the case with a women's fiction book. Some readers might be bothered that the sexual relationship started so quickly between two strangers. One major flaw in the book is though that despite the fact that Kate was always trying to collect recipes, none are provided at the back of the book, and you will be craving chocolate chip cookies before the end of THE FLING. ****
