1 Star is TOO MANY., March 17, 2001

I have read other books by Ms. Hess. Those were at least readable. I had to force myself to finish this book, just to see if it ever became better. Alas, it just went from bad to worse. It seemed as if Ms. Hess had a box full of "typical" romance plot lines. She would pull one out of the box, write about it and become unable to connect it to the story, so she would then pull another plot out. Try to think of all the plots available. They were all in there, and totally disconnected. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to the story. No character developement, no emotions(that made sense), no depth of any kind, the hero was exceptionally irresponsible-yet owned one of the largest ranches? He kept getting lost in his own back yard! I've been to Jackson Wy, wherever she imagined this book to be set, it was not Jackson. The heroine would have one personality, then would inexplicably switch to a different one. There was positively no reason for the hero to want to be with the heroine, exect lust. Ms Hess never took it past the hero's lust, and she never explained why the girl would ever tolerate this man. The secondary characters were wooden and one demensional, not only did they not grow, they stagnated. I must have said "I can't believe how bad this is" on each page. I was disappointed from the thrid page to the final one. It saddens me to have to give this a 1 star rating. It did not deserve it.

Big Disappointment, March 31, 2001
This review is from: Flint (Leisure historical romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I usually love Norah Hess's books, however, this book is not up to par. There were so many things that turned me off about the book. I was very touched that the hero truly loved his nephews and neice and made a home for them. It made for a ready made family once the hero and heroine got together. The kids gave them some common ground that just wasn't there at any other part of the book. Still I cheered for them to get together. The part that really disgusted me and was a total overkill was the the prostitute's son being the heros. The heroine had accepted having the nephews and neice as part of her family (she knew absolutely nothing about children)but to add an illigitamate son was asking too much. Norah, you have got to start producing better reading material for your die hard fans. I own every one of your books but I am beginning to doubt I will ever purchase another one written by you. I hope your put more into your next book Dillion. In closing pass up buying this horrible book and instead purchase these other books by Norah Hess -- Storm, Raven, Devil In Spurs.

Another fantastic novel by Nora Hess, March 16, 2001

This review is from: Flint (Leisure historical romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Once again, Nora Hess has penned a novel that touches the heart of the reader. Hess' hero in the novel may be rough around the edges but he has an endearing way with his niece and nephews that warms the heart of the reader and allows the reader to see past his womanizing ways. Hess' multifaceted heroine exhibits not only strength but vunerability which allows the reader to identify with her and experience the emotions that the heroine is going through. Throughout the novel, the tension between the hero and heroine is intense and keeps the reader deeply involved in the novel. With the interlacing of several colorful characters into the plot,Hess keeps the story entertaining as well as emotionally gripping. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys western historical romances and have enjoyed Nora Hess' previous novels.
