4.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic novel by Nora Hess
Once again, Nora Hess has penned a novel that touches the heart of the reader. Hess' hero in the novel may be rough around the edges but he has an endearing way with his niece and nephews that warms the heart of the reader and allows the reader to see past his womanizing ways. Hess' multifaceted heroine exhibits not only strength but vunerability which allows the reader...

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 Star is TOO MANY.
I have read other books by Ms. Hess. Those were at least readable. I had to force myself to finish this book, just to see if it ever became better. Alas, it just went from bad to worse. 1.0 out of 5 stars 1 Star is TOO MANY., March 17, 2001
I have read other books by Ms. Hess. Those were at least readable. I had to force myself to finish this book, just to see if it ever became better. Alas, it just went from bad to worse. It seemed as if Ms. Hess had a box full of "typical" romance plot lines. She would pull one out of the box, write about it and become unable to connect it to the story, so she would then pull another plot out. Try to think of all the plots available. They were all in there, and totally disconnected. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to the story. No character developement, no emotions(that made sense), no depth of any kind, the hero was exceptionally irresponsible-yet owned one of the largest ranches? He kept getting lost in his own back yard! I've been to Jackson Wy, wherever she imagined this book to be set, it was not Jackson. The heroine would have one personality, then would inexplicably switch to a different one. There was positively no reason for the hero to want to be with the heroine, exect lust. Ms Hess never took it past the hero's lust, and she never explained why the girl would ever tolerate this man. The secondary characters were wooden and one demensional, not only did they not grow, they stagnated. I must have said "I can't believe how bad this is" on each page. I was disappointed from the thrid page to the final one. It saddens me to have to give this a 1 star rating. It did not deserve it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment, March 31, 2001

I usually love Norah Hess's books, however, this book is not up to par. There were so many things that turned me off about the book. I was very touched that the hero truly loved his nephews and neice and made a home for them. It made for a ready made family once the hero and heroine got together. The kids gave them some common ground that just wasn't there at any other part of the book. Still I cheered for them to get together. The part that really disgusted me and was a total overkill was the the prostitute's son being the heros. The heroine had accepted having the nephews and neice as part of her family (she knew absolutely nothing about children)but to add an illigitamate son was asking too much. Norah, you have got to start producing better reading material for your die hard fans. I own every one of your books but I am beginning to doubt I will ever purchase another one written by you. I hope your put more into your next book Dillion. In closing pass up buying this horrible book and instead purchase these other books by Norah Hess -- Storm, Raven, Devil In Spurs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic novel by Nora Hess, March 16, 2001

Once again, Nora Hess has penned a novel that touches the heart of the reader. Hess' hero in the novel may be rough around the edges but he has an endearing way with his niece and nephews that warms the heart of the reader and allows the reader to see past his womanizing ways. Hess' multifaceted heroine exhibits not only strength but vunerability which allows the reader to identify with her and experience the emotions that the heroine is going through. Throughout the novel, the tension between the hero and heroine is intense and keeps the reader deeply involved in the novel. With the interlacing of several colorful characters into the plot,Hess keeps the story entertaining as well as emotionally gripping. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys western historical romances and have enjoyed Nora Hess' previous novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Dynamic, but nice easy read., April 16, 2004

I rate this book as a 3 ½ stars because the characters were not developed as well as they should have been to make the book a more appealing read. The storyline is good, so it is overall satisfactory.

1.0 out of 5 stars kass99, March 30, 2005
please do not buy this book..it was horrible how the male character in this book was nothing but a whoremonger. I can't believe norah hess had the nerve to the whore he slept with (tillie)have his son instead of lauren.. what the heck is that! This book was not romantic at all. It was about how another of ms.hess male characters are nothing but men that can not stop having sex...pass on people...I would never in real life marry no man that had a bastard son with a whore...Thank goodness this is fiction! I was disappointed in this book and mad!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Undeveloped, June 15, 2010
By
This review is from: Flint (Mass Market Paperback)

This had the makings to be a good book. Too bad the weather was written about in more detail than any of the characters. I could feel the biting cold through Hess's writing that made me shiver while reading in 96 degree weather. I know Hess has the talent to make the characters pop off the page, but these had no more depth than a paper doll.

4.0 out of 5 stars Story was quite good, September 7, 2001

(REAL NAME)
From the back of the book -- Rough Around The Edges -- A hard-eyed man, Flint Mahone came back from the War Between the States with only one tender feeling left -- for the missing children of his dead brother. So when the three little ones showed up on his doorstep with a fierce Wyoming winter in the offing, he knew he would do whatever it took to make them a home. Soft At Heart! Lauren Hart had been raised among outlaws, taught to gamble to make her way in the world, but she wanted nothing more than to lead a decent life, to meet other girls her age, to own a pretty dress. -------- One glance told her Flint Mahone was trouble [she didn't listen], A ladies' man who knew all the right moves and none of the right emotions. [another womanizer] --- Love was as foreign to him as marriage, but Lauren couldn't resist his plea for help. And when she saw the gentle way he held his niece, she knew there was hope yet of reaching the warm, caring man beneath the wild, carousing cowboy. ---------- JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING -- Lauren finds out from Dud, her surrogate uncle, that she has inherited a ranch, the Hayes spread, from her outlaw father. Kate, Flint and Jake's surrogate mother, is a great character and well worth knowing -- then there is Asher Davis, Flint's best friend and carousing buddy -- He needs his story --- The strange twist of Lauren's relatives ads another dimension and I really liked Colly's outcome -- Well, Jonas??? Ugh! --- I really like a woman who will take in a man's children as her own and make a great family ----- try it you might like it. --- my library rating is V.V. good --M.
