The next best thing to a real trip,
By Andrew Giambarba (agiam@grupoandino.com) (Miami, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
There are so few things that could even approximate real fly fishing. OK, there's nothing that approximates it, but there sure are a lot of authors who try to take you there. Flip Pallot has brackish water in his veins and his combination of phenomenal photos and stunning illustratons prove that he is one of the true pioneers of the sport. The photos are just for those who love to dream of the next trip. We fishermen love magazines, but this is like the banquet meal for those who have accustomed themselves to hoping a national magazine might have an article and a photo from our favorite part of the world. Enjoy the feast!

a great book about the evolution of saltwater fly fishing.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
This book is outstanding. Anyone who has been bitten by the bug of saltwater fly fishing can relate to the struggle of the author's early days of fly fishing in the Florida backcountry. We are fortunate that Flip Pallot dedicated so much of his time to learning and perfecting the art of saltwater fly fishing so that we can learn quicker without re-inventing the wheel. The photographs are as good as the writing which makes this book an immediate favorite of any fisherman.

The Walker's Cay Chronicals in hardcover,
By David Larkin (dlarkin222@aol.com) (south Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
This is exactly what I would expect from the man who films the Walker's Cay chronicals. It is as close to the water as you can get without being on it. If Flip ever reads the comment from the gentleman from Calif. I hope he continues on to read the rest of the reviews.

Coffee table books are meant to uplift your spirit. They are not novels, biographies,or mystery's. They are what no other book has to offer, an escape to someplace or places most of us can't go. With sweet memories of the past and accolades to all the people who touch Flip Pallot's heart the reader gets a glimpse of what makes this feller tick. He shares his knowledge, his friends and some of his adventures. And with the beautiful photography from some of the best professionals out there, you can experience first hand what a life this guy has!!!I could almost taste the salty sea breezes. This is an excellant gift also for the ladies who want to give a great present to the favorite angler in her life. And Vice Versa!! I loved it.

Getting less for your money,
By kensu@mcn.org (Ken Susman) (Ft Bragg, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
Weak writing, name dropping and a few rather insipid childhood memories, coupled with photos that occaisonally have something to do with the stories are the highlights of this book. Destined to be on the bargain tables of Borders and Barnes and Noble for the holiday season.

I re-reviewed the book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
Recently I received an email message from one of the editors of this book, criticizing me for my negative review (see "Getting less for your money"). Some quotes from the editor to me were: "your comments were mean-spirited", and "I hope Flip never reads your review, because if he does, he will never share his secrets with the public again".Her reaction was so strong, I decided to read the book again to see if I'd missed something. Well, I hadn't. This remains a book that can't figure out if it's a story book or a picture book. The text relies too much on name-dropping to try to hold readers' interest rather than on strong story telling, and the photos seem to be a mish-mosh of strong visual images that try, in my opinion, to detract the reader from the weak writing. If you want a good saltwater fly fishing book to read when you can't get out to the flats yourself, try "West of Key West", instead. 2 stars again.

Give Up, Flip,
By Kwan (Big Pine Key) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flip Pallot's Memories, Mangroves, and Magic (Hardcover)
Does Flip think he can sell this junk to real Keys anglers? The good old days are gone, and most of the big names Flip shares are old as well. Whey not a book by Flip comparing the past with the present.
