Book Description

There are numerous uses for the Flipchart: Hospital care, Doctors offices, Nursing Homes and Speech Therapy Centers to name only a few.

Hospitals can use it to communicate with intensive care patients unable to speak for various reasons such as intubation, throat damage and stroke. Patients can also take the Flipchart home with them for further use as they recover and regain the ability to speak. It first promotes good will for the hospital and second provides the caregiver with a way to communicate more clearly with their patient. The Flipchart is currently in use in several hospitals in the Southern California area.

The Flipchart is also an excellent tool to have at retirement homes aiding the staff and patients in communication.

The Flipchart is currently being used in speech therapy centers with positive results.

Several doctors have also purchased the Flipchart and they are using it in their offices to communicate with patients during office visits.

The Flipchart is also an excellent tool to have in the home for long term or continuing care of patients. This helps not only the patient, but the family members caring for them.

From hospitals to doctor's offices to nursing homes, the Flipchart is being used to communicate with patients unable to speak. It is simple to use, easy to understand, and an invaluable tool in providing quality patient care.

About the Author

Bryan Merton is an entrepreneur from Venice California.

He worked for American Airlines when, after ten years of service, he was given the opportunity to buy-out from the company. Shortly after the buy-out from the airlines, Mr. Merton's brother became critically ill and so he spent the next six months spending time with his brother and helping in his care. It was during the last two weeks of his brother's life that Mr. Merton started his current pursuit.

His brother was intubated and unable to speak. Out of frustration Mr. Merton wrote down everything that he thought that his brother might want to say. Being that his brother was medicated and sometimes had trouble reading small type, Mr. Merton decided to print each phrase in large type and place only one on a page. He then laminated each page so they could be used over and over again and would not be damaged from food spillage. He then bound them together with a global key ring on the upper left side.

Armed with his new creation he headed for the hospital unaware of the excitement to come. Doctors and nurses were so excited by the group of phrases that they asked where they could buy one and where Mr. Merton had purchased it.

Mr. Merton devoted the next two years to the research and development of his group of phrases. Interviewing hospital staff, charge nurses, doctors, speech care specialists, he found out the best phrases for many varied situations. Mr. Merton made several mock-up phrase books and decided on the name of Flipchart. Several of the mock-ups made were used in actual care situations that came up over the 2-year period. Each book came back with incredible response and praise.

With the final design complete, Mr. Merton teamed up with his Father Walter and formed a new company called Flipchart. Flipchart had the first five thousand books printed in February 1998 and the response in the marketplace has been enthusiastic!

Mr. Merton now works full-time for Flipchart and is busy distributing it nationwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tool for communicating with patients, April 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Flipchart (Spiral-bound)
The flipchart works very, very well for communicating with someone who cannot talk. It's full of common and useful phrases which facilitate dialog between you and someone who is ill. I found it to be very useful to "talk" with a friend who was hospitalized and because of repiration apparatus, could not use their voice. The flipchart is worth it's weight in gold if you are visiting with someone you care about who is ill or hospitalized.

Bryan Merton was given the opportunity, however unfortunate, to formulate this useful tool to be used in time of need. I have not had to use mine yet, thank God, but I bought it because "you never know." Also, friends and family have found it to be a lifesaver, so to speak, when they have borrowed it from me. Everyone should have one!
