Book Description

Is there a twelve-step program for recovering assassins?

Kayla McKenna is a covert assassin—and she likes it. After her father was murdered by terrorists, she was consumed by the need for retribution. But landing her dream job as a CIA assassin turns out to be merely a stepping stone in her plot to avenge the heartaches of the past... and present. One botched mission earns Kayla a burn notice, a bullet hole and a one-way ticket back to suburbia. Banished to her childhood stomping grounds with a meddling, shopping-addicted mother intent on grandkids, three overprotective cop brothers, a sexy criminal who can’t decide whether he wants to shoot her or date her, and a new boyfriend even her family loves, Kayla may finally get the chance to find out what really matters in life.

That is, if living a "normal" life doesn’t kill her first.

With a delicious combination of mystery, suspense, romance, edgy chick-lit, and a dash of paranormal, the first installment of the new Assassins Anonymous series is a wickedly fun treat.

3.0 out of 5 stars 5* for Chic-Lit aficionados; 3* for others January 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
FLIRTING WITH DEATH, Assassins Anonymous, Step One. Kindle Edition by Heidi Hall is a chick-lit mystery story.
Kayla McKenna awakens in an unrecognized room with intense pain to receive shocking news. The physician who restored her to life says she had suffered a bullet wound that had penetrated her left atrium and severed her pulmonary artery. She cannot remember what happened but knows she is the daughter of a man who had been killed by terrorists while she was still young and as a result grew up with a well-disguised underlying basic hatred. She recognizes that this basic pattern led her to become an assassin in the employ of the CIA. When sufficiently recovered to have visitors, her `back-up', David Westfall, informs her that the CIA has cut her loose, and she has nowhere to go but to make a return to a suburban way of life.
From this point, the story progresses with a series of probable and improbable events that include Kayla's family of three overly protective police officer brothers, a doting mother who adores shopping sprees and a grandfather with Alzheimer symptoms. There also is a handsome lawyer, who the mother discovers for Kayla, and the return of a love interest with a shady past, along with his man Friday, from the assassin days. David Westfall and Clair Hightower, the surgeon who saved her also reenter the picture and Mona, Clair's mother, is introduced. Mona runs a pot farm and both she and her daughter demonstrate some magical powers of healing as well as of intuitive perception.
Mechanically, the author has provided a `fun' story that breezes along at a fine clip with intrigue, passion and suspense with the overlying chick-lit bent that aficionados of the genre will love.
Now however, I hope readers of this review will understand and not be incensed with the following remarks. Briefly, when I acquired the book, it was in the belief that it would be another straight `mystery story'. It is not and I believe the prospective reader should be aware of this fact. It is, as I said, chick-lit. It is well written and most enjoyable for these readers, I am sure, For persons not enamored of the genre, unfortunately, large portions are a bit boring. I got this book free on my Kindle, I probably wouldn't have tried it otherwise - what a mistake that would've been! It was different. Fun and interesting! I can't wait to see what's next! I really, really enjoyed this book and hated for it to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lived with some of these characters. January 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A Nice blend of characters that will appear to satisfy the many roads of life we take and are forced to take. This is my kind of fiction which seems to point in the direction of reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that sometimes it too took a while to get to the point. Good story line, fun to read. I really enjoyed it.

Fun read with spies and uncertainties. Good twists and turns. Bit of superhero complex thrown in for good measure. Good start to a series, good characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This book took me by surprise. There was more meat to the story than your average chick-lit. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to future installments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun action with a little romance too
A fun thriller filled with action, espionage and a little romance. The female main character is independent and humorous. Can't wait to read part 2!
