She's a great character!

This is another great read from the writers of Jack Daniels mysteries.

It is a little on the slow side and not as good in that sense.

These stories were just OK. After reading them you kind of feel like they were churned out quickly to make money.

I started out enjoying Floaters. The introductory chapter with Alex grabbed me, and I liked the idea of him looking for the woman's missing husband. I got to the Jack Daniels chapter and was prepared to enjoy that too, but it seemed very short and as though it was just a bridge to get to the next Alex chapter. After that, the pattern stayed the same.

In the "interview" that Konrath and Perez did with each other at the end of the story, there was something about how it only took a month to write. Yep, it felt like it, too. It really could have used more development. Not necessarily a much higher word count -- maybe just a few thousand would have done it if they'd spent longer reworking the material they already had.

I ended up feeling that the story could have been told entirely without the Jack Daniels chapters -- or rather, that there could have been random cops stuck into the chapters where Alex is interacting with them -- and nothing about the story made me want to grab a Jack Daniels novel to get more of her character. I also felt that the experiment, while interesting, didn't result in a real collaboration.

I was also surprised when the story ended. It seemed that there should have been some kind of wind up, and one more opportunity for Jack & Alex to talk. Instead, it was just over.

I have to say that I now am more interested in books by Henry Perez, and I now wonder if that wasn't really the point of the collaboration, and perhaps Konrath deliberately allowed the Alex character to outshine Jack Daniels. After all, Konrath has become pretty successful, but I think that Perez is a newer author. Perhaps this was a successful joint effort after all.

A grudging 3 stars.

Quick and short. Half the book is a preview for another book. Should be sold as a short story. Not worth the $1.99 I paid for it. Will hesitate before buying this author again.

This is a very short read. The short stories are interspersed with "conversation" between the authors and a quarter of the book is excerpts from the authors' new books. The main story is unexciting. I was not that interested. The best is the Phin story - cannot give anything away. I suppose it was worth the 99c I paid. But I shouldn't bother. Some writers do short stories well. These are not wowing me.

I wish that this was a full length story, the mix of the two lead characters have the makings of a great full lenght novel. Even as a short story it was a great read!

One of the main characters is a female police lieutenant. She wears heels on the job (sometimes) and drives a car, on the job, that's at least 33 years old. I know times are tight, but Really?

I'll admit I"m not much of a mystery reader, so I was so-so on this book, but I got it for free. Hubby on the other hand was really entertained so I averaged our respone lol He said it was gritty which is what a man likes.
