Book Description

May 22, 2003
The author worked steadily in Hollywood from 1991-2003 as a writers' and producer's assistant, switch board operator, casting receptionist, executive secretary, hardware lease administrator, newsletter writer, and website creator, very often while "floating" - serving as a "temp" secretary or assistant in Production or Administration. While she hardly set Hollywood on fire (in a high-profile way), she achieved goals through dogged determination, a wildly contagious sense of the absurd, and lots of hard work. If your dreams include working in Hollywood, this book reveals one laugh-a-minute avenue for getting your foot in the door, and provides ample evidence that you don't have to be perfect (by a long shot) to be valued in - and valuable to - the entertainment industry.

About the Author

Kristine M Smith was born in Tacoma Washington. From an early age she has been "a writer" - her sole claim to immortality, since she has never married and cloned herself the old-fashioned way. Instead of raising kids, she raised cats, dogs, snakes, frogs, rats, and guinea pigs; and rehabilitated wild animals (raccoons, deer, hawks, and ducks) - in the process raising her mother Dorothea's patience-quotient to a level approaching Job's. Smith reflects: "Mom wasn't an animal person. There must be a special place in heaven for her, just for putting up with me! I raised a skunk in the fireplace one summer! Can you imagine?!" Smith moved to Hollywood in 1989 to take on a different kind of "animal" - the monkey-on-your-back thrill of working in the entertainment industry where dreams can segue into goals and then into realities, even though the route is far from predictable.

And now... for a brief non-animal bio (since you've probably already read the animal-centric one):

Author Kristine M Smith has been a fan of DeForest Kelley for almost five decades. She has also meandered among his fans at numerous conventions and at individual and collective ceremonies honoring him and the science fiction series he helped forge into an iconic legend. She writes: "I have witnessed first-hand the enormous love and respect people have for De. And I continue to see, almost daily, how people have remained enchanted with him, even following his passing in 1999. Millions of people were immediately and acutely affected by his unanticipated death. Tens of thousands of them expressed outright anguish ' feelings akin to losing one's best friend or a family member. A single, cursory visit to just one of numerous DeForest Kelley websites (national and international) proves the veracity of this declaration.

"Categorically and undeniably, De became -- and will endure as -- one of the most-loved and best-remembered personalities in the world. His Dr. McCoy is at the heart of STAR TREK's mythology, and TREK is a tenacious mythology which will last until the day humans forget how to aspire to a higher standard for themselves and their progeny.

"De was my friend, but he was also my hero -- one of very few heroes whose durability was sorely tested, yet found to be utterly reliable. I wrote this book (DeFOREST KELLEY: A HARVEST OF MEMORIES) to show how deeply De influenced my life ' and to remind you, his fans and friends, how seamlessly and comfortably he fitted into yours.

"I undertook this endeavor for the millions of fans who never had the pleasure of meeting De 'up close and personal.' My sincerest goal for this book is that it will validate every intuition you ever had about DeForest Kelley being one of Hollywood's 'good guys.'"

Smith has been an animal welfare advocate and humane education staff worker and executive director, a wild and domestic animal caretaker, an animal rescue worker, an executive secretary at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, and an Activity Director at an assisted living facility. She was DeForest Kelley's personal assistant and caregiver at the end of his life.

For the past four years she has been a copywriter, creating riveting copy for businesses here at home and around the globe. Find out more at kristinemsmith.biz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only in Hollywood!!, August 4, 2003

This review is from: Floating Around Hollywood: And Other Totally-True Tales of Triumph (Paperback)
For an enjoyable and humorous "read" about a person who worked in the movie and television industry, this is the book of all books!! Kris has a delightful sense of humor and it's apparent by not only some of her antics, but by her observations, interactions, and conversations with some of these people in the entertainment business.

She takes you "behind the scenes" at a baseball wrap party, she talks about being a "star polisher" but my VERY favorite of all of her escapades is the "walrus woman." That is all I will say - one has to read it to believe it!! In her own words, Kris writes: "Most business people have a sixth sense about what is appropriate behavior in certain situations. I possess the same keen insight, but there's a part of me that wants to buck traditional etiquette and be outrageous . . ."

That should be the best preview to some of her exploits. I leave it to you to get ready to laugh and laugh and laugh!! Buy one for you and buy one for a friend. They'll be glad you did!
