Why don't you come over to my house?,
By
This review is from: Floating Into the Night (Audio CD)
Most of the music on this CD was originally recorded for David Lynch's made for cable TV special "Industrial Symphony No. 1". Some of the songs were later used on Twin Peaks, where Julee Cruise ocassionally appeared as the Roadhouse Singer. Julee has a very ethereal voice, which is entirely appropriate for this album. The songs all have lyrics by David Lynch, with music by Angelo Badalamenti. The first thing you are likely to notice about the songs is that the words don't rhyme. That's pretty unusual, but somehow it works anyway. All the songs are love songs, by the way. The song "Falling" usually get the most attention, because it was later the theme song for "Twin Peaks", but the best song here is easily "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart". Not coincidentally, it also the closest thing here to a traditional song, in that it actually has a repeated chorus. This is actually a beautiful album, in it's own way. Oh, and it's better than the "Twin Peaks" soundtrack.

Sheer Perfection,

Haunting beauty is the best way to describe Julee Cruise. Hearing her sends goosebumps all over me. Everything from Blue Velvet's theme Mysteries of Love, Floating, and everything that she sang on the series Twin Peaks is here. The only thing missing is Questions in a World of Blue which is on Voice of Love and the TPFWWM soundtrack - but you have those already don't you? This CD gets much airplay in our house and is wonderful mood music - great for winding down to. By Far Julee's best album.

trembling in ecstacy,

i had first heard julee cruise in the eighties when i saw david lynch's masterpiece blue velvet. do you remember the song mysteries of love which plays at the end of the film when kyle mclachlan & laura dern are observing the sweet sounds of birds? wow! although i didn't buy her work until the early ninities, i was in love with the beautiful music to such a great film. after i bought floating into the night, i simply couldn't bring myself to take it out of rotation in my cd player & perhaps i even annoyed people around me but i didn't care. it was that good. yes, julee cruise's beautiful & ethereal vocals could keep you entranced for hours on end & it makes great sleepytime music too if you need a cd to fall asleep with. it's hard to categorize ms. cruise unfortunately without being somewhat unfair to her artistic integrity. angelo badalamenti is a brilliant composer & ms. cruise has worked with him on nearly every album since blue velvet. perhaps you remember the theme music for the tv show twin peaks or the theatrical prequel entitled fire walk with me? all great works. listening to cruise is like playing a spooky, smoky jazz alongside some terrif new age music amidst a malt-shop '50s sound. with the voice of an angel, you can't help but fall into her spell time & again so definately pick up a copy of this cd if you haven't already. i would probably recommend this cd to mazzy star fans, david lynch completists(he writes the lyrics here folks), or new age music lovers who love enya. if you think you might be interested after reading this review, i'm sure you'll love every second of this lovely album. check out tracks like falling, mysteries of love, & the nightingale for an idea of what i'm talking about. peaceful listening folks. long live badalamenti, cruise, & lynch !!!
