Simon at his best,

You can definately tell that this album is "Shpongled". It is a great album all to itself though. This will probably be the best chilled psytrace album of the year (2003). This will definately hold me over until the 3rd Shpongle album is released at the start of next year. :)

Meh??????????????????????,
This review is from: Flock of Bleeps (Audio CD)
this album is SICKY!!!! yes, sicky. i bought the more recent younger brother album, last days..., and while that album is great, this album... well, like another reviewer said, if you have ears... you need to let them listen to this. while i love shpongle, LOVE shpongle, this work is great in that it is a more continuous journey fit for dancing without stop, except for the occasional chuckle. simon posford... thank you again and again.

Shpongle/Hallucinogen for the masses,
By Radu Gruian (Seattle, WA, United States) - See all my reviews

The beginning of the album is absolutely brilliant; Simon's artistic and sound engineering skills shine through -- the first song would go perfectly on any Shpongle album. The next two (or so) songs are a little bit of a let-down. They almost sound like "Shpongle/Hallucinogen for the masses". They are easier to listen to than earlier Posford work. Not my style, but I can appreciate the effort. I am guessing that Benji Vaughan and possibly other people's influences are at work in these songs. I am not familiar with Vaughan's work, so I can't really say for sure.Starting with track 5, the album picks up and changes direction towards Hallucinogen-style psytrance. Tracks 6-7-8 are hard, fast, and beautiful. They culminate with an uplifting 4-minute auditory feast: "It's like a finger that points to the moon... Don't look at the finger, or you will miss all the heavenly glory!..." Starting with track 9, the album cools down, and finally ends with a 2:40 minute chill-out "Bedtime story". Even though I'm giving it only 4 stars, I definitely recommend this album. Tracks 1 and 5-8 are its backbone and well worth the bucks.

Sick, Sick, Sick,

Posford and Co prove again why he is pushing the limits of trance music. Great incorporation of organic elements while keeping the trance alive. The album starts out real thick and shpongle-ly then picks up pace in the twisted records tradition. If you like drippy psy-trance, this album has it all.

Meh.,

I guess it's an above-average psytrance album, but it just didn't do it for me. I should point out that I came to this album hoping it would deliver music similar to Shpongle, and while there are some similarities this is more along the lines of formulaic dance music: aggressive, repetitive, and, well, rather dumber than Shpongle.Bottom line: it's good for what it is (a dance album), but don't expect another "Are You Shpongled?" or "Tales of the Inexpressible."

Hadn't heard of this band until about six months ago and now wonder why that was. These, in my opinion, are two of the most creative, clever guys I have heard since discovering Yello back in the late 90's. I don't want to ramble on so just let me say these guys are my big find of the decade. This cd has been on my player more than any other of my cd's since i got it weeks ago. Love it. Infectious.

"A flock of bleeps" is as difficult to categorize as Shpongle. it's more dancefloor-oriented, but ranks right up there with "Tales of the inexpressible".This beautiful bit of the first song just keeps playing in my head, again and again.. "You may have noticed..that I am not all there..myself!"

Younger Brother, if you didn't know, at the forefront of psytrance music, led by Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen). His other projects, such as Shpongle, are absolutely incredible, and are absolutely worth purchasing. This album and YB's newest album, The Last Days of Gravity, though, are without a doubt not only Posford's best work, but the best albums ever created. Period. I know that sounds like quite a stretch, and I'm a HUGE fan all kinds of music, ranging from the Beatles and Pink Floyd all the way to Beethoven, but once I heard this music I knew that it simply cannot be topped. It goes beyond music, eliciting visual, touch, and other sensory stimulation; it creates a 'soundscape' for your mind, and is very much like a movie for your ears. When listened to with the right friends (I listened to both albums with my friend Lucy ;-), these albums will FOREVER CHANGE HOW YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC. It is stylish in ways that no other music has ever achieved, it is creative beyond anything to come out in YEARS, and and it is more unique and engaging than ANYTHING in this genre, or ANY genre for that matter. This is not a paid review, and I am in no way benefiting from posting this review - this music is really that good. The key is finding a HIGH QUALITY stereo (the best you can possibly find), turning down the lights, hooking up with your special friends, and listening to the albums FROM START TO FINISH. Be safe, be smart, and KEEP THE VOLUME UP!!! ENJOY!!!!
