3.0 out of 5 stars Not as new as it looks, July 31, 2010

This review is from: Flogging the Horses (Audio CD)
This review is more of the quality of the EP itself - the song selection - than a review of the music as SikTh's work. I think SikTh are a brilliant math metal/whatever you want to call them band, and this music is as good as anything on Death of a Dead Day (which is the only other album I own). My complaint about this EP is simple, that there's almost nothing new about it.

Flogging the Horses is obviously the same as the DoaDD track; Each Other And Ourselves is an alternate version of In This Light - it has different lyrics and some different musical directions, but the core is the same; Grind Choke [demo] is a demo version of Part of the Friction (which you may notice from the same length); The Plan Is Lamb [demo] is a longer demo version of Flogging the Horses (with a much longer slow section in the middle), and the vocals sound amusingly similar to Serj Tankian of System of a Down in the beginning ("camels walking free"); Where Do We Fall [remix] is a slightly longer and more relaxed version of the original.

Overall, this EP shouldn't realistically have any general appeal except for serious fans of the band. There's nothing particularly bad about it, but more casual fans (does this band even have any of those?) would be better suited to purchase full albums. For anyone still interested in purchasing the EP, I suggest buying directly from the label (Bieler Brothers) where it is only $5.99: [...]
