Our deck is now 25 years old, and it looks every bit of it's age. We've pressure-washed it several times, and I was thinking many of the boards looked beyond hope. We used Behr deck finish last time around, and were disappointed in the look (artificially red) and the durability (started flaking off in places after a very short while). This time around I decided to be more careful in my choice of finish. After seeing the great reviews for Flood both here and on the Lowe's site, I decided to go this route (btw, it's available at Lowe's for under $100 and no shipping).

I was told by the sales lady that this was an oil finish, so I was surprised when I opened it... it looked like chocolate milk. Or maybe a Wendy's frosty that had been left in the sun. When I started applying it, I quickly panicked... this was not like any oil finish I had ever used... it sat on the surface and seemed impossible to apply smoothly (I started on some hidden planters to test it out). It wasn't until I accidentally dropped the brush into the dirt and went to wash it off with turpentine that I discovered that it was water-based. And it wasn't until I got to the actual decking that I figured out what this stuff is all about.

This is an extremely slow-drying water based finish. So slow-drying that it will easily rinse out of your brush and roller pan after hours of painting. And that's awesome because after you apply it, it immediately begins penetrating deep into the wood. And it keeps penetrating for over an hour.

Although this is a great characteristic, it does present some difficulties: You cannot apply it in temperatures over 80°F, and they recommend that you avoid applying it in direct sunlight. That can be difficult in the south, where temperatures often reach 80° early in the morning.

I love CWF. The milky color for application is a great idea and helps you gage how much product you have to apply, especially useful for my 20 year old house that has multiple coats of various products. The sunny side of the house was real dry and required me to go over the same spot with the brush a few times. Shady side of the house took one stroke. My only complaint is I wish they had more red tint in it. I am putting it on white pine and trying to make it look like red cedar. It came out with more of a brown color, which is closer to the original CWF product.

Very pleased with the product.. We chose this one over several others based on comparison and feedback. This was applied to our deck which was overdue for attention. We put on three coats due to the sun exposure in the back of our house. We chose to brush it on vs spraying and feel certain this was the best choice.

We have used this stain on our house for 22 years but it is very hard to get it anymore. So happy to get the 5 gal bucket. Amazon comes through again.
