Book Description

This is the gripping story of a young girl and her two little sisters hidden in convents in Belgium during the Holocaust. Their mother's remarkable intuition and initiative, together with the selfless assistance and the vigilance of two righteous among the nations, George Ranson and Pere (Father) Bruno helped save them. Flora's story is one of the uncommon cases where good triumphed over absolute evil in the Holocaust; it is a tribute to those who took great risk to thwart the Nazis. The entire family survivred and Flora reflects on her parents: " I am at peace, no one killed them. They did not vanish without a trace like the millions of victims in the Holocaust. I know where they are buried and they rest in peace."

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story from an incredible woman, August 26, 2007
This review is from: Flora: I was but a Child (Paperback)
Flora: I was but a child is a thrilling retelling of the experiences of Flora and her two sisters as hidden children. Flora details the chilling events of near-capture, the brutality of her German oppressors, but most importantly the kindness of those that risked their lives in order to insure the survival of three Jewish girls. Two things are striking about this book. The first is the lengths to which people will go to fight against injustice and do the right thing. The second is the amazing will, intelligence, and fortitude of Flora's mother Fani. This book is a tribute to all three of the Mendelowitz girls as well as their mother. This is truly a beautiful piece of literature and Flora is an exceptional author. I am proud to call her a fellow human being and Jew, but I am even prouder to call her my great aunt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moved Me to the Verge of Tears, May 24, 2008
This review is from: Flora: I was but a Child (Paperback)
Novel-quality writing. Having two young daughters of my own, I was emotionally gripped by Flora's vivid autobiographical description of the death defying tribulations that she and her other young sisters and her mother endured in Nazi occupied Europe.
