An incredible story from an incredible woman,
This review is from: Flora: I was but a Child (Paperback)
Flora: I was but a child is a thrilling retelling of the experiences of Flora and her two sisters as hidden children. Flora details the chilling events of near-capture, the brutality of her German oppressors, but most importantly the kindness of those that risked their lives in order to insure the survival of three Jewish girls. Two things are striking about this book. The first is the lengths to which people will go to fight against injustice and do the right thing. The second is the amazing will, intelligence, and fortitude of Flora's mother Fani. This book is a tribute to all three of the Mendelowitz girls as well as their mother. This is truly a beautiful piece of literature and Flora is an exceptional author. I am proud to call her a fellow human being and Jew, but I am even prouder to call her my great aunt.

I gave Flora's book 5 stars before reading it, because I knew Flora and her husband personally, and am sure the book is wonderful. I had the pleasure of meeting Flora some years ago, with Elie Wiesel, and kept in touch with her. She once took a group of students and me through the Holocaust Museum, and made it more real. She was an inspiration to me! She experienced the depths of hatred and terror, and was shuttled from place to place by the Catholic clergy, at great peril. She bore no malice to the evil generation that robbed her of the innocence we want all children to know. Rather she has used the Christian love shown to her by spreading peace, joy and healing that came from deep within her Jewish faith. Now that Flora has died I pray her beautiful and infectious smile will continue to show that good does come from evil. She gives hope, which we so need! I will continue to promote Flora's book as a testimony to her memory and my friendship with her. The 5 stars aren't enough!

Moved Me to the Verge of Tears,
This review is from: Flora: I was but a Child (Paperback)
Novel-quality writing. Having two young daughters of my own, I was emotionally gripped by Flora's vivid autobiographical description of the death defying tribulations that she and her other young sisters and her mother endured in Nazi occupied Europe.
