Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As she showed in previous books such as Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep and No Matter What, Gliori excels at conveying a warm and supportive family. Here she knowledgeably explores a toddler's attachment to her security blanket. Without her beloved carrot-patterned blanket, Flora Bunny can't sleep. Her five siblings generously offer their own as substitutes, but she insists, "Want mine." An exhaustive search of the house and grounds yields nothing. So Mom and Dad let Flora snuggle up in their bed, where, lo and behold, her father discovers the missing item under his pillow. The loving perseverance of Flora's parents and brothers and sisters, as they amble and scramble around the house in search of the blanket, dominate the spreads. And the family dynamic (one sibling in striped pajamas reads a book throughout the search; torsos and feet show under tables or are draped over chairs) will hit the funny bones of and strike a chord of recognition with any toddler or older sibling. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-A charming book about an endearing rabbit family. Flora has lost her security blanket and can't sleep without it. Her five siblings offer up theirs, but she has to have her own. The family searches from the living room to the kitchen to the bathroom, and they inspect the sandbox and the cellar, but to no avail. Nearly asleep, Flora is finally allowed to snuggle in bed with her parents, and Dad finds the missing item under his pillow. The delicate, detailed watercolor illustrations portray a comfortable homeliness while Flora and her family wear expressions of concern, frustration, exhaustion, and relief. Like Flora's beloved blanket, the endpapers have a carrot-and-ladybug print on a white background. Excellent for bedtimes and as a read-aloud during toddler storytimes.

"Flora's Blanket" is a story about a little bunny girl who loses her blanket and can't get to sleep. Her parents wonder if her ears are hurting or if she has an upset stomach. But it turns out she's just missing her blanket. She and her parents search everywhere, first starting with the usual places and then looking in the really weird spots like the refrigerator. But they can't find that blanket anywhere, until it turns up in a surprising place.

The text is big and bold. The pages are fully illustrated with a lot of detail and very cute characters. Overall, this is pretty good, except that maybe the story could be just a bit stronger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for Toddler of any age, January 21, 2002

... I ... read to my 20 mo. old at night. She loves it -- we read it twice each night before bedtime. My little girl has her "silk" which has to go everywhere she goes so she can "identify" with Flora. The illustrations are wonderful...

I'm a fan of Gliori's other books (NO MATTER WHAT in particular) - the anthropomorphic animals depicted in her illustrations are engagingly expressive, and the humor in her drawings and text is both gentle and sly. She is especially good with background details, which often contain little jokes and subtle references - these help her books stand up to multiple rereadings. The story of FLORA'S BLANKET may not be the right book for parents struggling to wean their toddlers from dependency on a favorite toy or item of clothing, but it will amuse others who have witnessed and/or survived such tantrums (one of my favorite spreads in the book is the part where Flora's older siblings try to offer her their own blankets, to no avail). It also makes a good gift for reader who are keen on bunnies, as Flora and her family are rabbits (one detail that made me smile was the carrot pattern on *the* blanket when it's finally found).
