Book Description

Designated a Doody's Core Title!

This beautiful book bound in red leather includes an in-depth history about each version and the preparation and publishing of Nightingale's works. What is very interesting is the editor's commentary on the bibliographical and social history behind the various versions. He discusses little known facts about the book, such as the one published for the educated professional is the second version, whereas the other versions, though more widely published and more widely known, were written mainly for the masses. The editor's research clearly describes Nightingale's legacy and the effect it has had on contemporary nursing as well as nursing's future. At $40.00, it is a steal. Score: 98, 5 stars

--Doody's

With the 2010 publication of Dr. Victor Skretkowicz's Florence Nightingale's Notes on Nursing (Revised with Additions) in Florence Nightingale's (1920-1910) centenary year, nurses and others will recognize this extraordinary woman whose dedication and determination helped to shape the course of modern global healthcare and holistic and integral relationship-centered care.

-Barbara Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN International Co-Director, Nightingale Initiative for Global Health Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and Arlington, Virginia

Simultaneously witty, scathing, and anecdotal, Florence Nightingale's Notes on Nursing is perhaps the most influential work on nursing throughout the world. For years, the varying editions of this seminal work have puzzled scholars as well as readers. Now, Dr. Skretkowicz sets the historical record straight. This volume includes the annotated and unabridged July 1860 edition [the Library Standard Edition] of Notes on Nursing, the 1868 edition of Notes on Nursing [for the Labouring Classes], and additional manuscripts written by Nightingale in 1875 that she was never able to publish.

Beautifully bound in faux leather with a decorative ribbon, this commemorative volume makes a perfect gift for any nurse and is a must-have for all nursing libraries and researchers. The new edition presents Nightingale's unabridged edition in its original form for the very first time since its publication in July 1860. Together with the 1868 edition and the 1875 manuscripts, the book provides today's educated readership with the nearest possible authoritative, complete, and unexpurgated version of one of the best selling, globally circulated texts of the nineteenth century.

Key Features:

  • Complete with Dr. Skretkowicz's own expert commentary and annotations
  • Describes the variant versions of the texts in the contexts of their social and cultural history
  • Presents some of Nightingale's original passages that remained unpublished for more than 100 years
  • Provides reactions and commentary from Nightingale's contemporaries

About the Author

Victor Skretkowicz currently is Senior Lecturer in English, University of Dundee (Scotland). Dr. Skretkowicz is a highly recognized and accomplished professor, scholar, author and researcher in English literature, including Shakespeare, Early English Fiction, and Elizabethan and Renaissance studies. His work on Florence Nightingale emerged as a result of several grants related to conducting bibliographic studies of her work. This project took shape upon the discovery that Nightingale's work has been confused and miss-referenced by scholars and historians, mainly due to the existence of three versions of the Notes on Nursing, published in quick succession between January 1860 and June 1861. He has published 28 reviews and review articles in refereed journals and has delivered 45 papers in the UK and internationally. Dr. Skretkowicz's reputation as a scholar is evidenced by his external recognition and awards, including serving as External Assessor on Promotion (Cambridge University), Fellowship Assessor for the Newberry Library (Chicago), Major Research Awards Assessor, Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada (2001), External Examiner for the PhD (Univ of Glasgow), and External Assessor for Promotions (UCLA), among others. Dr. Skretkowicz serves on two Editorial Boards, including Oxford Univ Press.

If you are lucky enough to have a first or second printing of the Nightingale book, this will help you figure out its age. Not easy to otherwise do as there was much variation back then within a single printing. It's like having your very own rare book assessor sitting on a shelf.
