Sorry to tell you cdbndp, but the restaurant was closed a couple of years before the documentary premiered (as noted in the documentary) so you would not have been able to stop by even if you wanted to. Anyway, I saw the documentary and I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. As far as the right wing is concerned, I wouldn't be too concerned since they will always find something to be angry about.

A self serving excuse to immortalize Florent himself. Shallow and full of empty stories. An after hours refuge, with decent food and extroverted people are not a reason to document.

This movie would have been great idea if it was done properly and it actually focused a bit more on the restaurant in its heyday rather then just showing mostly clips of the closing night. I found the story to be disjointed and never really had me feeling any love for this place, the staff or the owner. I actually spent a lot of time there in the 90's and loved it.... But the film left me feeling very mixed and felt it didn't really reflect the true character of Florent (the restaurant or the owner). It seemed this documentary was slapped together in a couple of days rather then being thought out over a period of time. I was amazed that the stories told by the staff were so lack luster brushing over important points as when Madonna was there or Prince.... and to be honest they just seemed drunk and silly. The owner Florent- did a lot of 'poor me' but in fact - he had opportunities to buy the place but seemed he was just caught up trying to be Queen of the party or a Steve Rubell type and let it all fall away. I am sure he is a nice man but the movie did him no justice at all. I especially hated the line when he found out the boy he had slept with died... he assumed HIV- and when he found out it was in a car accident his response was 'thank god'. He appeared very shallow and made me feel no sympathy when he finally revealed he was HIV pos (as that line distracted from of his own news). Overall, this film was just a huge disappointment. Its a shame as I was very excited to see the title... but what a complete let down. (*the really positive reviews also appear suspect as the reviewers have never reviewed anything else- probably an attempt to get a better rating)

We were lucky to have eaten there in the final days. Wonderful atmosphere and great food. Florent was a pioneer, and leader of a movement. If you love NY, you'll find this movie excellent.
