Book Description

September 1998 10 and up5 and upAmerica the Beautiful, Second
Describes the geography, plants and animals, history, economy, language, culture and people of the state of Florida

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-The volatile topics of growth, Florida's beautiful environment, and expanding population set the tone in the first chapter of this revised title. The state's economy depends on tourists and relocating workers, yet it is this influx of people that is creating an ecological disaster. Heinrichs balances these topics well, presenting in clear language the history, culture, and economy of this multifaceted state. While some descriptions of cities read like infomercials, the text is straightforward and brimming with tidbits such as underwater cave diving that make Florida uniquely interesting. Photographs and illustrations are vibrant and relevant to the chapters, although the photo of the space shuttle Challenger on the launch pad under the chapter heading of "A Century of Progress" is disturbing. Ethnic diversity, endangered wildlife, and the changing economy are all addressed concisely with enough information for reports. A solid, up-to-date addition.
