Diplo: a magnet to those seeking genuine, groundbreaking music,
By Art Vanderlay (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Florida (Audio CD)
Nobody sounds like Diplo. Many may try to match his visionary style of dj-ing and production, but none will ever come close. Diplo's brilliance helps to underscore everything that is wrong with most dj/producers today by consistantly displaying his abilty to create unique music and dj sets that move, not just your arse, but your soul.
'Florida' is not the type of album you will see challenging Usher or 50 Cent to the number one spot. It is more likely to challenge your concept of music through its subtle, almost warped take on hip-hop and electronica. Comparisons to DJ Shadow have emerged in relation to Diplo, but close comparison of the two is enough to dismiss that claim. 'Florida' is not a party album that will get the booty shakin', it will however provide the listener with a sonic treat of undeniably unique and beautiful sounds fresh from the great Diplo.

Ok, so Diplo is, as you've probably noticed, being compared to likes of DJ Shadow and RJD2. Well, lemme start by saying this man creates some amazing loops on this album, his drum sampling is impressive and his melody's are usually pretty strong. I would most definitely put him on par with RJD2, but he doesn't come close to Shadow. All the tracks on this album are NICE, but the problem comes in that they are much too repetative and a few seem slightly overproduced. He will do a loop for X amount of time and then create a break, but that pattern gets old fast. I really like the core of every song, but I find myself getting bored by a lot of tracks after a minute or two. Also, there are several tracks, like Diplo rhythm and Indian Thick Jawns, which would be amazing if it weren't for some of the vocalists. I can tell he's trying really hard, and he's talented, so if you're into DJs or trip-hop i would definitely recommend picking this up if you want a nice surprise. I'm seriously looking forward to his next album in spite my slight dissapointment with this one. If he keeps improving he's going to be a force to reckon with.

prepare to be blown away,
By J. Blaze (Helena, Montana) - See all my reviews

This CD is brilliant. Diplo is being lumped in with the likes of DJ Shadow and RJD2 and it shows. He exhibits the same layered arrangements and attention to detail but still puts out his own unique sound. Amazing elements of jazz, hip-hop, ragga, turntablism, female vocals, the whole 9. It's one of the few CDs that I actually will pay for after downloading.
This is the real effin deal, folks. Hop on the Diplo train now, because this cat is destined to blow up, and you'll want to say you were down way back when.
