A Good Primer for Travel in Florida,

This is an excellent guide for those interested in exploring beyond the confines of Central Florida and the theme parks. From Perdido Key on the edge of the Panhandle to Key West and Dry Tortugas, you get a good overview of what Florida has to offer. With photos on almost every page and concise information, you'll be ready to hit the road and give yourself a complete Florida vacation. The book does have a section on the WDW and the other theme parks, and if that's your main interest, it would be better to get one of the many dedicated guides that cover the manufactured fun.

I bought it for my girlfriend before our trip to Florida, and it helped her visualize things better than researching on the internet. I grew up in Jupiter, FL and now live out west, but I learned at least 100 new places and things that I didn't know, especially around Miami and The Keys where we were going.

I love this kind of guide for all the images they show of the places you are going to see. The only problem I have is that there is no much information about accomodations. For that I had to look into another guide or online.

a distinctive outlook on the sunshine state,

Of all the travel guides books I've come across, this is the definitely the best one! It's like a travel guide and an encyclopedia in one! It makes all those other guides disposable and bland. This one is informative, illustrative, detailed, and fun to read. Each page gives information on shopping, entertainment, beaches, architecture, etc. I love how the book breaks down Florida in geographical sections. The journey starts with Miami which is understandable. Miami is in its entire league of its own. It has its own merits that makes it incomparable to other areas in Florida. Miami has flavor, culture, vibrance, and excitement. It's my favorite city here in Florida because there are more things to do and see in my opinion compared to the rest of Florida. This is where tourists will get a taste of the Caribbean and Latin influences that spread in the atmosphere. After Miami comes Gold Coast and Treasure Coast that come off pretty average. I'm a Floridian by the way. The Gold Coast and Treasure Coast have the shopping, beaches, and rich, upscale lifestyle but everything else is to a lesser extent in terms of nitelife and fun activities. Up further is Orlando and Space Coast which is my second favorite next to Miami mostly for the theme parks and my need to explore my inner childhood. There is also abundant shopping and endless family entertainment. The Northeast and the Panhandle may seem a tad bit boring since they are more a historical, old fashioned areas and they are actually considered to be the "true south". As the book mentions, it doesn't have the exotic diversity like Miami or the thrills of Orlando. They seem more like for old-timers. The only places that seem fit for younger people like myself are Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach. The Gulf Coast looks like it's of a different state. The buildings look like the northern states. St. Petersburg does seem like a nice city with tall buildings from what I remembered. I leave the Everglades for the more adventurous people. Key West seems more laidback and island like. As a Floridian, I can tell you that the only areas I haven't touched are the Northeast, Panhandle, and Key West. As you can see, each area has its own uniqueness. One area has more of a southern/country feel, one is like you're cruising down Beverly Hills, one is more northern, while the other you feel more of the Caribbean presence. No matter where you go...it's all Florida.

Florida guide,

I've been to Florida a hundred times, but almost always to visit relatives, and so most visits were to non-descript corners. I bought this guide after hearing a frequent British visitor to the state tell me how much he loves Florida, in hopes of being able to see the place with new eyes.
These Eyewitness guides are terrific, of course, for their photos. But the writing is also first rate, and does a better job than other guides I've read of making destinations sound interesting. Finally, the series are written for non-Americans, and so have comments about the place and an orientation that American-made guides miss completely.

Lots of photos and the pages look great, but the publishing house seems to have left the real writers out of the loop. If you want to compare hotels, find a good restaurant or an off the beaten path adventure, other guides are far better.

This is one of the best, most complete guides to Florida travel. I have several Florida guide and travel resources and find that I always go back to this book.
