About the Author

Elinor De Wire has been researching and writing about lighthouses for more than thirty years. She is the author of many articles and books about lighthouses, including the Guide to Florida Lighthouses, Lighthouses of the South, Guardians of the Lights, and the Sentinels of the American Coast. Her popular Lighthouse Activity Book and Lighthouse Almanac grew out of a unit on lighthouses she developed and taught to fifth graders. Now retired from teaching, Ms. De Wire writes and lectures full-time and creates "Kids on the Beam," a bi-monthly column for Lighthouse Digest. She lives in Washington with her husband and her cat, Lighthouse Kitty.

More About the Author

Elinor DeWire has been researching, photographing, and writing about lighthouses since 1972. She has visited more than eight hundred sentinels in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and Australia and is the author of fifteen books and more than 250 articles on the subject. Former Coast Guard historian, Dr. Robert Scheina, calls her "America's most prolific lighthouse author and a driving force behind the recent upsurge in interest in preserving lighthouses and the history and nostalgia surrounding them." DeWire has been honored for her work by the U.S. Lighthouse Society, the American Lighthouse Foundation, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National League of American Pen Women. Two of her books have won the coveted Ben Franklin Award and the Coast Guard Book Award. DeWire also has written three books on amateur astronomy. She lives in the Puget Sound area of Washington and teaches at Olympic College.

The informed and informative text details the history and lore of Florida's thirty-three lighthouses. Fascinating facts pepper the engaging presentations as children will learn how lighthouses operate and how their original roles (so vital to the safety of ships at sea) gradually evolved into today's maritime museums. Highly recommended and thoroughly fun reading!
