Grade 4-8. Two series entries with a clean look. The texts move logically from an explanation of the problems causing the animal to be endangered to possible solutions, covering history, evolution, physical features, habitat, and lifestyle along the way. Both books highlight people who are instrumental in saving the species and include controversial issues such as the dispute over crossbreeding Florida panthers with Texas cougars, or the politics involved in decisions on what to do with the overpopulation of mustangs. The full-color photos are clear and informative. Extensive lists for further information include Internet sites, current books, pamphlets, and periodicals. Margaret G. Clark's The Endangered Florida Panther (Cobblehill, 1993) has more photographs than this newer title. Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Where the Wild Horses Roam (Clarion, 1993) provides a more visually exciting look at the mustang. While this book had amazing facts and had lots of information it was also incredibly dull. The authors did not try to entertain the reader at all. It made me want to put down the book and choose a new topic. If you did need lots of info this book is for you however you could find a more entertaining choice.
