Florida elementary history adjunct, August 23, 2011
We are homeschooling our son, who is entering 4th grade this year - State History year. We've ordered textbooks, workbooks, science books...but this is the only "fun" activity book that he has to look forward to, that we've been able to find.
It's not perfect - most of the activities come w/ no explanations or information to make the learning deeper...for example, even on the very first page, there's a crossword that names the 'five natural regions' of Florida, w/ absolutely no preface/map/explanation/expansion/resource information. but it's a fun & easy crossword. The map of FL cities doesn't include Jacksonville (the largest city in our state, if you don't count Miami/Dade - since Miami's governance was so corrupt the Feds disallowed it), and still one of the largest cities no matter what else you count. there's no historical background for the Florida state flag's bars. Fred the Fisherman doesn't fish for grouper at all, which on our side of the state - the Gulf of Mexico - is the primary catch.
But as an adjunct to a true Florida history curriculum, this book will be fun & diverting. Not deep or thought-provoking, but useful in it's place. And that is all good :).
