4.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful coffee table book, May 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Florida's Fabulous Insects (Paperback)
This book has great photography and discription of various insects, however. this is a large book so you can't take it outdoors to try to identify a certain insect. It is a very good reference book

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Florida's Fabulous book, January 19, 2007
This review is from: Florida's Fabulous Insects (Paperback)
This is part of an entire series of books about Florida's flora and fauna. The photographs are excellent. While they are paperbacks, they are oversized and approach coffee table quality. As someone that has lived in Florida for more than 47 years, I can attest that these books do a more than adequate job of capturing the essence of Florida. This book is not all-inclusive since Florida has thousands of insects. It has a limited scope, but still does a great job of highlighting the most interesting and most photogenic insects in Florida. It is not meant to be field guide or biology text. It is more of an overview, but it does it with style. I purchase every book in the series on which I can lay hands. Highly recommended for Floridians and those that are interested in Florida. This book would also interest non-Floridians if they like to know about bugs.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great reference book on insects, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Florida's Fabulous Insects (Paperback)
Whether you are a gardener, birder, butterfly-lover or landscaper, you should enjoy this book. After my garden finally succumbed to the heat/humidity of summer, I thought I would try to educate myself with all the bugs, or should I say insects, that I have seen lately. I learned that many insects aren't true bugs; hey, read the book for more information. This is a great reference book and the pictures are clear and concise. There is lots of interesting tidbits and enough information to educate even the most informed person.

Recently I was working under an old live oak tree cleaning up brush and weeds and I was bitten on my foot. Stupid me, it was hot and I was wearing open croc-type sandals with no socks. I noticed what I thought was a huge orange ant and I killed it. Then I went to soak my foot until it stopped hurting. Little did I know that what I thought was an ant (Velvet Ant) is actually a wingless wasp and it is beneficial. They are parasitic insects and not aggressive unless, you guessed it, someone tries to pick it up or step on it. OK, I learned my lesson.

The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was because I would have liked to learn more. I'm greedy: hover flies, more beneficial wasps, and a list of plants to attract beneficial insects. In this day and age we need to avoid pesticides when possible. It is 168 pages and is easy reading for a rainy, hot or winter day and even non-Floridians will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS book in a FABULOUS series, September 25, 2010

This review is from: Florida's Fabulous Insects (Paperback)
Every Floridian can find something to love about the Fabulous Florida nature series. Florida's Fabulous Insects [FLORIDAS FABULOUS INSECTS] is one of the favorites in my collection.

I bought the Insect edition specifically for the Dragonflies, Damselflies and Ladybugs but there is so much more that this wonderful book offers! I can spend hours exploring this beautiful book.

Yes, beautiful! I never thought I'd describe bugs as beautiful but the photography is so spectacular ~ one can truly witness the behavior and spirit of every venerable insect gracing these gorgeous pages.

I have learned so much from Florida's Fabulous Insects, it has become an essential book on my reference bookshelf. The photography makes identification much easier and there is so much practical and useful information to go with each subject. It's wonderful to know which of these insects are actually beneficial to my garden. The discovery experience I feel reading this book is exciting. Amazingly enough, I am even less afraid of bugs now!

These books are absolutely beautiful! The pages are high quality glossy and while the books themselves are too large to be practical as field guides, they do provide everything, and I do mean everything, one could possibly wish to know about each subject. The authors and photographers are respected authorities in their fields and every page is loaded with stunning full color photographs as well as many interesting side notes and curious tidbits of information.

I highly recommend for all nature lovers, and particularly Floridians and Florida's many visitors, Florida's Fabulous Insects and the entire Fabulous Florida nature series. I guarantee many hours of knowledge and entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Deal; Great Photography; Useful Narration, July 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Florida's Fabulous Insects (Paperback)
Came across this book series in a gift shop where they were only a few more bucks there than on here. This book series is by no means a complete field guide for the topic in question. However, it is an excellent, entertaining, informative detailed overview. For me, a great coffee table book; at the same time a great quick-reference. The photography is excellent, usually performed by a seasoned photographer in the respective field. The narration & descriptive information is provided, typically, by another expert in the field, including professors, etc.

I am a fourth grade teacher in Florida and this series of books is wonderful to use with my students. The pictures are large and colorful and the information is easy to read and formated in smaller chunks. We always take a field trip to a local pond near the end of the school year and these books help students easily identify the creatures they see.

This Book Is Perfect If You Want To Know A Little About The Main Bugs Of Florida, But It Didn't Include Very Exact Details For Some Bugs. This Book Is Mostly For Children. But Overall, It Is A Good Book If You Want To Spend An Hour Or Two Learning And Reading About Bugs.
