Note: This is NOT a field guide.,
By Melissa Holmes (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Florida's Incredible Wild Edibles (Paperback)
Florida's Incredible Wild Edibles is a wonderful little book(let) filled with informative tidbits, yummy-sounding recipes, and lists of pretty much every wild edible plant that grows in Florida. It is interesting and witty, and really makes one want to go out and harvest edible plants right now!The book groups the wild edibles into categories such as salad greens, pot herbs (must be cooked before eating), nuts, teas/beverages, etc. All plants are listed with their common names along with their scientific names, which is extremely helpful when looking up pictures in a field guide. Another plus is that the author tells us where in Florida these plants grow (North, Central, South). It is important to note, however, that if you are new to harvesting wild plants, you may be a little disappointed at the lack of pictures/drawings/descriptions. This book is NOT a field guide, and plainly states so. It is meant to be used along with a good field guide book (such as Peterson's), or a human field-guided tour/weed-walk. Overall, great little book about nature's fine and free dining in Florida. Two thumbs up! :-)

Based on the title (I know, I know) I thought this would be a recognition guide for Florida's wild edibles. It is to some extent, but it's better thought of as a cookbook for Florida's wild edibles. In that, however it excels. Recommended if you already are familiar with Florida's wild edibles and want to learn to enjoy them more, but if you're just starting to learn you'll probably need to start with something a little more basic (and perhaps in color).

I just took a foraging class with Green Deane--and I took this book. We got to discussing the lack of Florida-specific literature. Most of the foraging books have Ohio as ground central. This makes for disappointing foraging particularly in South Florida :) Florida's Incredible Wild Edibles is one of the few that address this area. Also, if you are interested in foraging I highly recommend one of Green Deane's inexpensive classes. It helped me put a face on some of the plants described in this book that I was unsure of.

Not as comprehensive as I would like and only has line drawings. I am still sort of a beginner and would like some actual photos of the plants. But he does have a lot of recipes and ways to use the plants he covers.

I've had this book for over 15 years. Am in Garden Club and wanted some of these excellent books as gifts for guest speakers. It has great recipes for eating wild plants.

Originally purchased 4 for 3 of these books to share with friends. It was so popular that I ordered 4 more . . . all have been distributed to friends who are interested in sustainable lifestyles.

The information is very helpful, but it would be much more effective with color photos rather than the basic sketches of each plant.

Florida's Incredible Wild EdiblesThe book has only black and white drawings, info was limited and difficult. Very disappointed. It was difficult to identify plants with black and white drawings. Should have been photos of plants
