I have worn these shoes for years. They last me about 7 years (alternating black and tan ones, that is). Have them re-soled several times. The leather is thick and high quality so the shoes are initially stiff and require breaking in. This takes wearing a few times and I have even gotten blisters during break-in. But, once they fit you, they are great and polishing and sole dressing makes them look new after several years of use.

Purchased in 2012 with the goal of wearing these shoes for special occasions. I probably have worn these shoes maybe 40 times in the past 2 years…usually for just a couple of hours.

Overall the fit was good. The shoes are sturdy and the main parts of the shoe are leather including the body of the shoe and the soles.

What has failed with the shoes is the areas around the heels and the edges where the laces go. These edges are not leather, and appear to be some sort of man-made leather-like material. It has failed in numerous places…the shiny part wears out and leaves white/grey areas that don't match the leather in the shoe. Tried polish, but given the the material appears to be some sort of fabric, it doesn't look good.

I would advise against buying these shoes until Florsheim upgrades to real leather for edging. You won't like the way you look.

The Florsheim Imperial was always a better than average shoe back when shoes were made all over the U.S. I saw these in black and thought "uh oh". The Floesheim retailer does not have these and the guy at Florsheim can't tell me who has them. I took a chance on Amazon. The shoes fit just like a 10.5 D is supposed to. Amazing! Stiff, shiny leather. They cut under both ankles and were close around the ball of the foot for a few days just like they were when you could buy them back in the '70's. Preventative bandaid on the left heel for only one day. Two weeks later I have great looking, broken in shoes that actually fit. My feet aren't tired and overworked after walking around the office all day. I only wish they were made in USA. Nevertheless, the shoe has twice the character of the rubberized footwear so commonplace these days. Thank you Amazon for a great price on a real pair of shoes.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Goldfinger on April 4, 2014
As a long time Allen Edmonds customer I was in the market for a new pair of black longwings but not too excited about the prospect of dropping nearly four bills. After some comparative shopping and reading the many positive reviews of the Kenmoor's, I decided to take the Internet plunge without trying these shoes on first as I could not find a pair locally. At half the AE price I figured it was worth the risk. The ground shipping was fast so I was anxious to slip on my prize once they arrived. Ouch. The arch support pressed high and they were about as forgiving as a pair of 2x4's strapped to my feet. I thought I had made a mistake in purchasing these shoes sight unseen but I persevered. The first morning wearing them to the office was an endurance test, my will against the shoes, but each day they got a bit more comfortable as they slowly began to conform to my feet. The break in period can take a week or two but they are beginning to feel like old friends. The gunboat look of the shoes fits me to a T, conservative yet stylish. Construction is solid. If they hold up like my AE's (which have worn like tanks over the past 10 years and are still going strong) then Florsheim gets all my dress shoe business. I did swap out the cheap cotton laces for a nice waxed pair. It also would be nice to have a shoe horn included in the box but for the $$ I saved over the AE's I can't quibble too much. Lastly, Florsheim's customer service is excellent. I had a few questions for them during the break in period and they were willing to go the extra mile. So far I'm very pleased.

Update- The padding was pressing into my arches so I removed the inserts and peeled the foam off. I then glued the leather inserts back in. Problem solved.

I used to buy these Florsheim Imperials when I was in college, 40 years ago and am very pleased that the quality hasn't dropped one stitch even though they aren't American made. This is my second pair I have purchased and I am extremely pleased with the shoes.

Florsheim Imperial Kenmoors are the bees-knees of gentlemans shoes. The ne plus ultra. Before the mid-80's, they were made in the US. Now, in India. The "Long wing-tip" style is also known as "Gunboat". Not only because they are substantial and represent everything America stands for---gravitas---but because they are built like the kind of Navy Ships one sees tattooed on the arms of heroes in vintage cartoons. Gunboats baby. I have two pair of 40 year old Florsheim Imperial gunboats, and two pair of modern. The old Imperials had a metal "V" wedge on the heel to prevent wear. The smooth leather soles and the metal wedge make for an adventure when walking on smooth floors. These days, the Florsheim is still one heck of a shoe. Still meets the standard implied by the nom-de-pied, "gunboat". Yes, they are made in India. Yes, they are about $150 less than the Allen Edmonds long wingtips. The leather is their finest and selected only for the Kenmoor line, not the cheaper rubber soled low-class shoes they also make. Perhaps there is some aspect of construction, or some slightly higher level quality in the materials AE uses, but, I doubt it. Truth is, things made overseas can be of extremely high quality. Does the average Union Member making a shoe in Boston do a better job than a guy overseas who worked his butt off to earn the honor of working the Kenmoor line? Is the extra cost of an American made shoe due to higher labor costs (Unions) or higher quality and materials?
Today's Florsheim gunboats will be stiff and rude when you first wear them. You willl get a blister. Man up. You got blisters when you first started lifting weights, but, you got used to it and your hands toughened up.
