Nice bag, but..., June 8, 2011
This review is from: Floto Luggage Poste Messenger Bag, Black, One Size (Misc.)
I searched for a nice leather bag for several months before I discovered Floto and their line of products. First, let me say that I really like their business model. In a nutshell, they try to make attractive Italian leather pieces available at reasonable prices. I found their line of products to be very nice and the staff was very friendly and helpful when I called about questions. Kudos to Floto. Now on to the bag...
First, it's gorgeous. The color is rich and it has the appearance of a much more expensive bag. I have no problem walking into any professional setting with this bag. I've received several compliments on the bag's look and feel. The Poste Messenger is also very light, so if you're someone that likes to travel light then this is your bag. It's also very compact, much more so than how it appears in the pictures. Personally, I really liked this since I don't carry many things and the things I do carry are generally small. However, if you carry a laptop with this bag you'll need a fairly small laptop. The bag is lined with a very nice/soft suede so you won't need to worry about scratches on any of you stuff from a hard or rough leather surface.
Second, I do have some gripes that are not apparent when you're looking at it online. Like I mentioned above, the bag is gorgeous. However, the appearance is only skin deep. I've carried the bag on my daily commute for a few months now and the color is fading. It even appears to be wearing off where my hip rubs the bag as I walk (thankfully I haven't noticed any transfer to my clothes). Also, the leather seems cheap. That may be part of how they keep the costs lower, but it's very thin and doesn't appear to be dyed completely through. As I understand it, higher-quality leather is thicker, dyed completely through, and darkens with age and use. Finally, the buttons on each of the two closures are a pain if you go in and out of your bag frequently.
On the positive side, it's pretty light and easy to carry. I really like that about this bag. I found that it's comfortable even when loaded with a couple books and misc other things (pens, umbrella, etc). That said, I highly recommend buying Floto's "super strap" if you plan to carry this across your body. The strap included is too short and places the bag firmly in your arm pit.
Bottomline: this is a great bag if you commute by car, want to keep your bag light, and don't plan to use it during heavy daily foot/train commuting in a big city. But if you're looking for an heirloom piece or something that holds up against even mild abuse, this isn't it. For that, look at Saddleback Leather (no, I'm not affiliated, but I am a customer).
UPDATE: I've carried this bag for several months now. It has held up a little better than I anticipated, but it's certainly showing a lot more wear and tear than I expect higher-quality leather would. The comment below says that leather lightens with age, but that's only true with lower-quality leather. High-quality, full-grain, leather darkens with age. There are several places where the color has either rubbed completely off, or faded drastically. I still think this is a good car-to-desk bag, but it's not one that will take a beating if you're a subway rider.
UPDATE 2: This review was originally written for the brown version of this bag. Somehow its now showing on the page for the black bag. At any rate, the portions of this review that refer to fading apply only to the brown version. The portions that refer to overall build and quality should still apply to any color.

A Detailed Review, October 16, 2011
This review is from: Floto Luggage Poste Messenger Bag, Black, One Size (Misc.)
SHIPPING
This bag arrived fast - 2 days from when I ordered it. It was sent via UPS Ground in a white Floto box. The brief was wrapped in protective plastic.
FLAP
The flap snaps onto the cargo pockets which is nice because it means you do not have to undue the buckle every time you need access. The buckle adjusts the length of the strap according to how much stuff you want to fit inside it.
MAIN COMPARTMENTS
The main compartments fit my 15" Apple MacBook with extra room. There is no protective padding so I inserted a foam strip that I had on hand from a window AC - this way I can rest it on the ground without having to worry about slamming my notebook. There is room for improvement in this area but for now this works fine. The compartments fit all of my magazines and paperwork - which is a lot less in these days of iPads and notebooks. I can also carry my iPad in the front compartment.
CARGO POCKETS
These have snap pockets and are great for carrying iPhone, business cards, pens, etc.
ZIP POCKET
Over the cargo pockets is a large zip pocket - this is a BONUS - was not expecting this level of detail. You can use it for photos, airline tickets, magazine, etc.
STRAP
The strap is adjustable and can be clipped to the side or top - it is best carried "Messenger" style.
OVERALL I am very pleased with my purchase and I would recommend this bag highly to anyone.

Beautiful vintage bag, October 13, 2011
This review is from: Floto Luggage Poste Messenger Bag, Black, One Size (Misc.)
After seeing the movie iL Postino I was inspired to find a cool leather postal / messenger bag and found it with the Poste Messenger. I absolutely love this bag - if only I could find myself riding a vintage bike through the Aeolian Islands with my Poste Messenger instead of writing this review in a cubicle life would be perfect.
