Product Description

Flourish Excel is a simple source of readily available organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be obtained via relatively simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). Since both processes occur simultaneously one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel either alone or in conjunction with CO2 injection. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3). Flourish Excel is an integral component of Seachem's plant products and is recommended for use with the entire Flourish line as well as our Flourite and Onyx gravels. Contains no phosphate or nitrate.

I thought this was important stuff I found. Use it as a reference when necessary.

3 FAQ's on Flourish Excel from the Seachem website.

Q: When I first dosed my tank with all the Flourish products I was experiencing quite a bit of hair algae. Within three days the hair algae had turned a reddish orange and about four days after that it had completely disappeared. Do you have any idea just which of these products could have caused this? I must admit that I have never seen such a dramatic change with the algae when I first used the Flourish products, and I would really like to be able to repeat the experience when ever the algae re-appears.

A: This is a known side effect of Flourish Excel that may sometimes occur. It has been reported to us by other consumers, however it does not occur under all conditions therefore we do not promote it or sell it for that purpose.

Q: I have an AP Bio-Chem Zorb pouch in my filtration system. Will it scavenge the organic component of Flourish Excel?

A: Chemical filtration medias will have a very minimal impact on Flourish Excel but not enough to warrant removing them from your filter when you dose this product.

Q: Is it better to add Flourish Excel at night or in the morning based upon plant carbon uptake physiology?

A: Carbon intake is a function of photosynthesis. Based on this, it would be ideal to dose Flourish Excel during the day. But given that Flourish Excel can stay complexed as a carbon source for up to 24 hours before it dissipates, you can dose at any time of the day and the product will be available for the next 24 hours. Flourish Excel is not carbon dioxide and there is no impact on pH using Flourish Excel.

A must have product for those running medium lighting tanks without CO2 injection! I dose mine daily to accelerate plant growth and help keep a nuisance black hair algae at bay. There have been clear improvements in the health of my tank since I started using excel!

Tanks with low or high lighting won't get as much use out of this product. Plants in low light tanks will usually have growth that is to slow to need to added benefits while plants in high light tanks will grow to quickly and are better suited for a pressurized CO2 system. Use of this product as a means of algae control is beneficial regardless of lighting intensity.

If you plan to use this product regularly, I highly recommend getting the 2 L bottle over the smaller ones. A single 2L bottle of excel will last my 40g tank for over a year!

This is a hard product to rate because there are so many different aquarium setups. In my opinion this product is useless in a low light tank because plant growth is limited by the light and not the amount of carbon dioxide (or this replacement). It is not appropriate for high light tanks because you would have to use this expensive product in huge quantities to achieve the results of an inexpensive to run CO2 system (actual equipment is not inexpensive).

But for a mid-light (around 2.5 watts per gallon) tank like the two tanks I have this product is wondrous if used in conjunction with fertilizer. I have been using this product for years now and my plants grow so well I am always pruning so the fish have room to swim. This product will cause you more work, you will have to be cutting and grooming your plants on a regular basis.

This product will also kill all the algae in your tank if you overdose. I have read that the reason this is not an advertised capability of Excel is that marketing as an algaecide would put it under harsh regulations.

Amazon had an extremely hard time getting this to me. Be warned, they don't package this correctly so you might be waiting a few weeks to get this. I had to place three orders with them before they finally packaged it well enough that it didn't open during shipping, which stopped delivery. Took two weeks.

But that has nothing to do with the actual product, which is great. Destroys algae and gives your non-rooted plants a boost. Just make sure to get your light, macro nutrients and micro nutrients in order as well or you will kill your plants. Make sure not to overdose too, that will kill your plants as well. Has really gave a nice push for my plants!

I love this stuff. Finally set up my tank with live plants after years of plastic ones. I don't have co2 setup, so some of the algae outperforms the plants. After consistently dosing with this per the instructions, the plants are growing faster and greener while the algae is slowing down and actually dying off.
I plan to incorporate co2 into my setup before this bottle is gone.
Definitely recommend this product

I picked up Seachem Flourish Excel and Flourish to green up Xmas/Java moss and Anubis plants and it performed as advertised, greened up my plants in a moment, I am also pleased to find out that the product combats Staghorn algae. After a couple of weeks the algae has vanished. If you have issue due to a lack of sufficient carbon, this product fits the bill. A great buy!
