Book Description

041535031X 978-0415350310 December 23, 2004 annotated edition
During the 1940s and 1950s, Islamic reformism flourished in Iran. This book examines how Iranian Islamic groups came to rethink traditional accounts of religion and nurture a politicized version of Islam. The author shows how similar social and political circumstances, but different family and educational backgrounds gave rise to socialist, democratic/scientific and fundamentalist/militant reinterpretations of Islam. What was common among these groups was a tendency towards politicizing the religion. A significant contribution to discussions of contemporary political thought in Iran, this book will be of interest to researchers and academics of Islamic political though and Iranian politics and history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, but too descriptive, May 14, 2006
This review is from: The Flourishing of Islamic Reformism in Iran: Political Islamic Groups in Iran (1941-61) (Routledge Studies in Political Islam) (Hardcover)
A reader from United Kingdom

A fluent short book on the social and political thought among Iranians with a religious background, within a turbulent period, the years before and after nationalizing the oil industry in the country. It is an interesting selection of people and groups, but why is it limited to them? It could have included a much wider spectrum. It provides us with some attention-grabbing information, not found elsewhere, referencing to the original sources in Persian. However, it does not go far beyond a descriptive review. The author tries to establish a link between the political thought of the groups and individuals and their social, political, family and educational background, but does not provide us with hard evidence or quantitative data.
