Book Description

At a time of deep crisis the notion of flourishing seems unimaginable. However, distinguished psychologist Maureen Gaffney believes passionately that not only is it possible for us to flourish, but in an increasingly uncertain world, it is essential that we plan to do so.

Flourishing is about achieving a deeper sense of well-being, meaning and purpose despite, and indeed very often because of, adversity. Indeed, Maureen Gaffney explains that adversity can be a positive turning point in our lives if we decide that our goal is not merely returning to the status quo, but having better lives. Her message is that we can do this and in this exciting and innovative book she shows us how.

Drawing on her vast experience of working with people and organisations, and on a fascinating body of recent research, Maureen Gaffney has written a gripping, stimulating and inspiring manifesto on how to flourish and why we need to. Learning to flourish - and helping others to flourish - is the most powerful and worthwhile investment we can make in our own well-being and in our country's future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flourishing is a best seller April 11, 2012
By August
It is no surprise that psychologist Maureen Gaffney's book is still at the top of the best selling list since it was published before last Christmas. If there was ever a time when a positive grip on life was needed it has to be now, and Flourishing provides a wealth of different ways to do just that. This book raised my heart. It is firmly rooted in research, it is easy to read and understand and it is written in a style that makes it impossible not to `turn the page' - as they say. Maureen Gaffney, in her own inimitable way, has given us a book for our time. In setting out ten strategies to help nurture a flourishing life she has provided us with a road map. Using our everyday experience she opens our eyes to new ways of seeing old habits and suggests possibilities that can improve our well-being and bring new meaning to our life. On a personal note, the section on Meditation is particularly pertinent, given the current focus on mindfulness. This section gives a welcome overview, clear and simple, of why and how we can make the best use of our attention and learn to become `mindful'. To quote, the skills involved in "being more in control of yourself and your life are at the heart of flourishing" (p181).
At first glance this book may appear to be a difficult read but that is not the case. It lends itself well to dipping in and out of different sections and that, in turn, may lead to further exploration and engagement. This book is a joy to read and one to return to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! October 28, 2011
Thank God for Dr Gaffney! In a world of sterile cynicism and vacuous injunctions, finally there is a book which treats its readers as intelligent. 'Flourishing' demonstrates Gaffney's command of the literature and substantially adds a fresh perspective and contribution to this body of work including positive psychology. The book illuminates the subject with real life examples which I found very helpful. Those familiar with Gaffney's writings to date will enjoy the consummate clarity of this book. An excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars More signficant than just a standard self help book October 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I appreciated this book from beginning to end.

It's method of asking the reader to reflect on their own highs and lows and learn from how you responded and felt was very powerful.

I am very passionate in terms of my beliefs and am a consummate believer that beliefs with actions are meaningless. Via this book I was began to realize how my passion could have undermined by my own emotional or not well thought out responses. I think when we are young an outburst sometimes is considered appropriate and even necessary to convey our intent and maybe it did convey exactly that but if faced with a similar situation how can I better couple what I've learned with my experience to arrive at a better response and follow through.

Furthermore, if you work in a science or engineering filed and/or consider yourself technically oriented this book will suite you. I have applied a model based problem solving approach to many relationships and interactions using 'data for' and 'data against' as a key mode for learning and improving. This book complements my approach perfectly by using common terms.

Lastly, I have been skeptical my whole like about meditation and its use as a tool for improvement but this book resells meditation in a very constructive manner to be used as a valuable tool for reflection.

Great book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot to take in - but worth the read May 8, 2012
I don't think I've ever read such a comprehensive, extensive, easy to follow articulation of the patterns of our minds coupled with psychology, sociology and practical steps to increase your happiness.

I found the first 5 pages quite boring and fluffy and put the book down. About 4 months later I read a summary article in a magazine and thought the book was look a second chance - I haven't put it down since!

There are levels of concepts that in the latter stages of the book make it somewhat difficult - I will be re-reading a number of chapters.

Overall well worth the read.

It would particularly suit a man as a first read into the world of personal development.

It has helped me to see live in a different way and the theories explained can be applied in the real world. Some repetition and slow to read but good all of the same.
