I have read several Eric Butterworth books, but this is my favorite. He writes in a way that the average person can grasp his writings. I have given this to friends, and have had good reviews from them also!

This book is useful as an introduction to a topic that most people have not seriously explored - the concept of an impersonal God. I am a member of Unity, so worship side by side with people who hold these views. However, Butterworth's "theology" is essentially pantheistic, maybe pan-deistic, but he is not a Christian panentheist. If you are a seeker, seeking a real God, I would recommend anything by Charles or Mrtyle Fillmore or anything from the Unity Classics series. Stick with with classical Unity theology. Charles Fillmore viewed God as something transpersonal, not less than personal, but more than that. If you want to view yourself as God in miniature and feel no moral obligation to anything but getting rich, keep reading Butterworth and his ilk. I'm sure you can make your dreams come true. If you want a God, stick to the older Unity theology. Charles viewed God as his best friend (see The Story of Unity by James Freeman) and knew nothing about an unloving God. Later metaphysical thinkers have twisted Fillmore's words to support a theology he would not agree with and make it look like his "later thought." I would not buy this. Check it out at your library like I did. Not Christian. Not religious. Not panentheism. Just pantheism - God is the sun, moon and stars and you can tap the cosmic energy to make all your dreams come true.* I have decided to upgrade my rating from one to three stars just because I am impressed by the quality of the composition. |
