Editorial Reviews

From Jazziz

Miles Davis is evident in more literal terms on guitarist richard smith's Flow (Heads Up). Covering the familiar "Milestones," Smith sets up a blues shuffle with a hip-hop flavor to it, as he plays tug-of-war with a zigzagging brass chorus section. A similarly unlikely cover - Kenny G's "Pastels" - turns out to be the best illustration of Smith's mixture of subtle, nylon-string work and breezy electric playing. As colorful as these two tunes are, however, instantly memorable originals like the balmy title track (which blends a laid-back guitar lead with skittery electronic percussion), the sly, throbbing bass-driven blues of "Drive Time," and the easygoing ballad "Love Looks Without Eyes" are testaments to the straight-to-the-point writing style that's made Smith one of smooth jazz's most bankable composers. Of course, he's shown that promise from the beginning. And with a thick and hypnotic reworking of the gorgeous "The Great North" (from his 1987 debut, Puma Creek), he reminds us what a smooth-jazz guitar-sax ballad is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars . . . Like the Greatest River, the Clearest Stream, October 29, 2000
This review is from: Flow (Audio CD)
Richard Smith is unique, hard to "pin down" (as if we wanted to pin him down?). But any artist who can stop you in your tracks with the track, "When the Soul is Smiling," deserves not five stars, but maybe ten -- for starters. Continued and greater success to this guy. In THIS world, we need more souls like his.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Aint Enough Stars to Rate This !, June 15, 2000

This cd was recorded onto tape and sent to me by a friend in the US before I had discovered Smith's amazing talents. This cd is quite superb and there is no other way to describe it. I'm stunned nobody has rated it yet. I cant find the words to adequately give it credit....Five stars is definately not enough to do justice to Mr Smith's excellent, haunting grasp of the saxophone.

I have listened to this cd over and over and the magic is never lost. The US is truely blessed to have such amazing talent!

While playingside with jazz greats such as Richard Elliot, Richard has shown himself to be a worthy headliner in his own right. Great album!! Have enjoyed his in-person performers such as R Elliot and Marc Antoine.
