More About the Author

Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 in Croydon, South London, and spent most of her life there. Because of ill-health she was educated at home and largely taught herself to draw and paint, encouraged by a supportive family and assisted by membership of the Croydon Art Society. She was only sixteen when she had her first work accepted for publication as a set of postcards, and from that time she devoted her career to painting. It was her Flower Fairies books that brought Cicely Mary Barker her greatest popular acclaim. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school.

The fairies are endearing and realistic.
Her exquisite illustrations and quaint, lovely poems are a joy for readers of all ages.
Especially delightful in this edition is the Hollyberry Fairy.

Although an editor's note explains that Flower Fairies of the Winter was compiled using illustrations from the seven flower fairies books published when Cicely Mary Barker was alive, I think it's worth owning. We get to have winter flowers and trees in one book. The same note states that there are more winter fairies in the 1990 edition than there were in the original 1985 edition.

These are the fairies that appear in this book, in alphabetical order:

Blackthorn Fairy
Box Tree Fairy
Burdock Fairy
Christmas Tree Fairy
Cotton-Grass Fairy (appears with the Rush-Grass Fairy)
Dead-Nettle Fairy
Groundsel Fairy
Hazel-Catkin Fairy
Holly Fairy
Lords-and-Ladies Fairy
Old-Man's-Beard Fairy
Pine Tree Fairy
Plane Tree Fairy
Rush-Grass Fairy (appears with the Cotton-Grass Fairy)
Shepherd's Purse Fairy
Snowdrop Fairy
Spindle Berry Fairy
Totter-Grass Fairy
Winter Aconite Fairy
Winter Jasmine Fairy
Yew Fairy

My preschooler loves fairies, and we have been collecting the pop-up books based on Cicely Mary Barker's illustrations. The "Flower Fairies" series of books by Cicely Mary Barker are simply enchanting - in "Flower Fairies of the Winter", the delights of the season as evidenced in nature are brought vividly alive through the descriptive poems and also the gorgeous illustrations of the various fairies. These little books are perfect for little hands, and for reading aloud. It's also a great way to introduce young children to poetry.

I loved the book but I made the mistake of buying this and all the rest of the seasons, trees and flower fairies books as well as the Complete Book of the Flower Faires". I then realized that all the pictures in the small book were the same as the big one. So I wasted $ with shipping both ways. Oh well live and learn. Beautiful pictures though.
