Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2--From "The Apple Blossom Fairies" to "The Zinnia Fairy," this collection based on the poems of Cicely Mary Barker includes a fairy song for each letter of the alphabet, with the exception of the letters "u" and "x." Featuring such traditional instruments as the mandola, Celtic harp, zither, and recorder, the gentle music, reminiscent of the Renaissance, perfectly captures the beauty of the life of the fairies. Beautifully sung by children and adults, the words of Barker's poems are expertly woven into the music. The liner notes contain the lyrics from each song and several of Barker's illustrations from her book of the same title. An excellent addition to collections for young children.--Veronica Schwartz. More About the Author

Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 in Croydon, South London, and spent most of her life there. Because of ill-health she was educated at home and largely taught herself to draw and paint, encouraged by a supportive family and assisted by membership of the Croydon Art Society. She was only sixteen when she had her first work accepted for publication as a set of postcards, and from that time she devoted her career to painting. It was her Flower Fairies books that brought Cicely Mary Barker her greatest popular acclaim. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school.

Cicely Mary Barker's art is so perfect it's sure to win the hearts of both the young and young-at-heart. Her dear poems bring the fairies to life. It gives a fairy-life view of the alphabet through precious drawings and poems from the brilliant hand and mind of a true believer! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, April 20, 2007
My twin girls are now 4 1/2 years old and adore this book and its companion CD. One of them falls asleep to the music every night. They know all the words to each song (they are even beginning to understand the words they are singing, which has enhanced their vocabulary in beautiful ways. I highly recommmend this book and CD!!!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First try with this book resulted in a cover that looked like it had been run over by a forklift. The exchange book was sent out within 12 hours and arrived a few days later as perfect as could be. The book is small (it is for fairies), but we bought it as a lyric book for the flower fairy CD that has all the poems set to music. With both the CD and book, our girls and boy LOVE going on long trips because they all get a chance to read and sing along... not that they don't have the music memorized already; we are on our second CD because the first was scratched up from normal play after 4 years of daily use in the car.
