Book Description

April 21, 2005 5 and upK and up
Weddings are no fun! That's what Anna thinks when she finds out that she is going to be a flower girl in her aunt's wedding. She'd much rather hide under the couch until the whole thing is over. But when Grandma pulls out a dress from a box in the attic, Anna can't help noticing how pretty it is. In this refreshing and heartwarming story, Anna discovers that weddings may not be so bad after all.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-When Anna overhears that Aunt Julie wants her to be a flower girl in her wedding, she couldn't be more disgusted. She thinks weddings are boring and would rather be riding her bike. But then she follows her mother, aunt, and grandmother to the attic and watches them unpack her mother's wedding dress and her grandmother's veil. Before long, Anna forgets her initial reaction and gets into the spirit of things. By the end of the book, she has completely changed her tune. Furgang's simple story is well told and charmingly illustrated. Jessup's gleeful images convey Anna's rambunctious nature and mercurial disposition while incorporating carefully chosen design elements, like the pink and blue patterns from the boxes in the attic that show up on the endpapers and as backdrops for certain pictures. Just like the boxes, the book has delightful surprises inside.

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. When Anna learns that she's expected to be the flower girl in her aunt's wedding, she's not excited: "I would rather ride my bike or go swimming." But as her mother, aunt, and grandmother rummage through boxes in the attic and stories of family weddings unfold, Anna is captivated. When her mother's wedding dress emerges, Anna tries on the veil and gloves and wonders about her own wedding someday. Like the titles in the Read-alikes feature, "Down the Aisle" [BKL My 1 01], this warm, straightforward story explores the annoyance and anxiety that many youngsters experience when asked to participate in weddings. Furgang's text, written in Anna's voice, nicely captures a young girl's disgust and then reluctant enthusiasm over the event in age-appropriate dialogue and details. Jessup extends the warmth and humor with appealing pastel sketches that show the family scenes and the sweeping dress from Anna's close-to-the ground perspective. A good suggestion for reluctant flower girls and little ones with wedding fever. Gillian Engberg

I loved this book, because of the gorgeous illustrations mostly. The story is well-served by the bright and funny drawings, and the little girl's expressive face is a story in itself. This guy Harley Jessup is very talented and really sees the world as a child would. Five stars--have a look!

3.0 out of 5 stars Connections, April 7, 2003

This book, like many childrens' books would suffer without the great illustrations. The vibrant cover had set my hopes high for good story to read my daughter. I was left feeling, is that it? The art is fun, I'm sure the illustator could have written it just as well by himself.
