3.0 out of 5 stars Good songs, but...., December 31, 2000
This review is from: Flower Power (Audio CD)
This is one of your classic hodgepodge albums. Trot out a recognizable '60s phrase like "Flower Power," put day-glo Summer of Love cover art on it, and call it "psychedelic."

The individual songs range from OK ("Reach Out of the Darkness") to great ("White Rabbit," "Crystal Blue Persuasion," and "Incense and Peppermints"), but these songs really don't have much to do with each other besides the obvious fact that they were all recorded in the '60s.

The Seeds would probably be offended to have "Pushin' Too Hard" labelled as a flower-power hippie song. These guys were garage/punk, NOT a flower-power band.

"Did you ever have to make up your mind" is not even the Lovin' Spoonful's best song, and it is about as far from "psychedelic" as you can get. Same goes for "California Dreamin'."

I can hardly think of a worse juxtaposition of songs than the slight, corny "Along Comes Mary" (slightly psychedelic, but only in the coy lyrical content), being placed right after "White Rabbit." Or the nice but bubble-gummish "Green Tambourine" being placed right next to "Psychotic Reaction." The track sequencing is your typical "slap a bunch of songs together" job.

But for $8, I probably should not be too critical. Taken for what it is -- just a way to get a few good '60s songs -- it is certainly worth the price. Just don't expect it to follow its supposed "psychedelic" theme.

3.0 out of 5 stars 'Flower Power: Psychedelic Rock Classics' (K-Tel) Various Artists, November 20, 2011
This review is from: Flower Power (Audio CD)
Twelve songs by some of the (there were many) late '60's psychedelic giants. One track each from the likes of the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Lovin' Spoonful, Tommy James & The Shondells, Jefferson Airplane, the Lemon Pipers, Count Five (believe or not their entire sole lp is pretty good, as I've heard many fans say the only fine song is "Psychotic Reaction") and one band that I, myself didn't recognize by name (at first) - Friend & Lover but I do most certainly remember their one hit "Reach Out Of Darkness". Didn't know they had a full album out, as I'll have to check that CD reissue out when I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars I lived this, November 5, 1999

This review is from: Flower Power (Audio CD)
This an excellent compilation of sixties tunes by the original artists.I`m a fussy one though. Now let`s get a cd with the likes of Keith Barbour`s ECHO PARK, The Sand Pebbles LOVE POWER, Norman Greenbaum`s SPIRIT IN THE SKY, all together on one cd with rockin` instrumentals like Paul Mauriat`s LOVE IS BLUE, Raymond Lefevre`s AME CALINE(soul coaxing) and Mason Williams CLASSICAL GAS. Of course let`s not forget the tunes of Mr. Acker Bilk or Burt Kaempfert. This is just a dream for a fifty year old, to get everything I`m looking for on about ten cd`s. This one is surely a good start!
