More About the Author

Cicely Mary Barker was born in 1895 in Croydon, South London, and spent most of her life there. Because of ill-health she was educated at home and largely taught herself to draw and paint, encouraged by a supportive family and assisted by membership of the Croydon Art Society. She was only sixteen when she had her first work accepted for publication as a set of postcards, and from that time she devoted her career to painting. It was her Flower Fairies books that brought Cicely Mary Barker her greatest popular acclaim. Like the Pre-Raphaelite painters whom she so much admired, she believed in recreating the beauty of nature in art and in drawing from life. Her plants and flowers were observed with complete botanical accuracy and in the fairies themselves she captured perfectly the unselfconscious grace of children, whom she used to sketch in her sister's school.

Format: Hardcover
I love Cicely Mary Barker's work. The drawings are botanically accurate, with a subtle artistic softness that makes them very pleasurable. I've been an avid gardener for over 15 years. Working in the garden regularly, you see the flowers, feel the seasons, and become part of the cycle of nature. The art and poetry in Flower Fairies of the Garden captures the essence of that experience.
Cicely Mary Barker's books are wonderful. I add one to each order I place on Amazon to complete my collection.

My granddaughters who are 5 and 7 years are very intrigued with Fairies and their stories. They love the poetry in this whole series of books by Cicely Barker. I love reading these books with and to them. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and inspire their imaginations.

Format: Hardcover
I actually got the entire series of the Flower Fairies books for my preschooler who loves fairies and is a great fan of the pop-up books inspired by Cicely Mary Barker's fairies' illustrations. These books of poetry and illustrations are quite small, perfect for little hands and even for older readers who would like to escape everyday reality and just linger in another realm, filled with the wonder of nature and magical beings. The illustrations are very detailed, capturing the beauty of the various fairies as well as the plants depicted. Highly recommended!

Each year I purchase a special book for each of my grandchildren and this was perfect for my 4 year old granddaughter who loves magical things and has started to enjoy being in the garden with me. This was a perfect gift for her!
