Editorial Reviews

Sean's fifth and newest release, Flowering Spade, marks the first time Hayes has ever recorded in a studio. Basic tracks, overdubs and mixing all happened in the same room where Van Morrison, Santana, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many others made magic in the 60's and 70's. Most of the album was recorded live in the studio. Hayes authored all thirteen songs, whose arrangements and melodies span the gamut from raucously hip-quaking to tenderly heart-breaking and leave you humming along for days. To help bring Flowering Spade to life, Hayes called in amazing players like Ches Smith, Shahzad Ismaily, Devin Hoff, Todd Roper, Ara Anderson, Rob Reich, and David Boyce from the avant-garde jazz and post-rock scenes of NYC, LA and San Francisco. Combined, they've played with the likes of Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Nels Cline Singers, Xui Xui, Cake, Tom Waits, Tin Hat, OK GO, Gaucho and Broun Fellinis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, some truly great music! June 22, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best full albums I've heard in a long time. I'll make no bones about it, this is one scruffy looking dude, so if your major appeal to music is the marketing, this might not be for you. However, if you love music that is well and thoughtfully written, this is really going to melt your butter. This album is great for a mellow night. His lyrics are sharp and the vocals are effortlessly beautiful.

If you enjoy this I highly recommend looking into its predecessor "Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star" which is, honest to God, equally as amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally addictive November 5, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant album that I find quite addictive. It seems to always draw a lot of attention when I share it with others over the radio or at gatherings. People will ask... "Who is this singing????" The Flowering Spade is also a great choice for break music in live performances. It is one of those albums that appeals to everyone. Cheers

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm in love with him. February 19, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I just love everything about it. I feel like I finally found my kinda music. He is perfect!!! My husband thought he was creepy (we have nothing in common in taste of many art pieces) but as he keeps listening (I torture him) to him, he's started liking his art. I love it!!! I need to get more of him.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of a kind. March 28, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
This album has been an active participant in my music rotation for the past couple of years (along with his other albums). It's not every day that you come across an artist like Sean Hayes, but when you do, their music will live with you for a very long time. His clever and thought provoking lyrics will bring deep and personal meaning to his songs, and he doesn't mind throwing in a couple tunes that make you want to pour a glass of wine & dance your ass off through the night. And not only does he have an exceptionally good voice, but a voice which is full of strength and emotion. A Sean Hayes album is a must-have for every music lovers collection.
