These are really beautiful and such a great price. Very happy with my order. They arrived very quickly too!
Just a tip: Make sure you order the cord (sold separately) with the light bulb attachment if you don't already have on.

I ordered two of these Japanese Lanters to hang in the trees for my backyard fall wedding. They arrived in perfect condition and look wonderful! They will be a great addition to our small backyard wedding next fall :-)

The paper is stark white, the design colors are solid black and red.

To assemble the sphere, you jam a bendy metal wire bracing piece into the sphere. One end of the brace pushes against the top opening, and the other pushes against the bottom opening. In this way, the ball is held in a roughly spherical shape so that it doesn't just collapse back down to the flattened pancake shape in which it was shipped. The top of the metal brace has some little bendy parts on it that are meant to hold the cord connected to a light bulb, which would then dangle down into the middle of the sphere.

At our house, we did not use the dangling bulb method, instead opting to secure the sphere around a permanent ceiling light fixture. Some extra parts were required to secure the product to the ceiling fixture, because it was designed for use with a corded socket, but the ball looks nice now that it's in place. It is currently around a warm color ~45 watt CFL bulb positioned above a bed, and scatters the light nicely for a comforting, mood-setting effect.

I would recommend this product to those looking for a bold and colorful design. Be sure to double-check the diameter of the ball you order to ensure it's really the size you want.

If I had to pick a negative point, it would be that the bracing wire piece is designed only for corded sockets which hang down into the sphere. If I could have my way, it would be equally suited for connection to fixed sockets such as ceiling sockets. These details are not made clear in the product description, but are probably somewhat implicit to those familiar with paper lanterns.

Design details for those interested:
There are two different designs, each of which is repeated alternately on each of the eight sectional pieces that comprises the sphere. As you can see in the product image, one design faces left, and the other faces right (they look very similar, but are not mirror images, and face opposite directions). The black branch of the tree runs off of the side of each pattern, and the way the sphere is constructed the branches merge with each other where the left and right facing design sections meet. So the end result is four identical "U"-shaped designs, each composed of two of the eight total sectional pieces.

This lantern looks really nice and was shipped fast.

My only (tiny) complaint is that the picture makes it seem like the pattern is all the way around the lantern, when it is actually only on two "sides" of the lantern. This just means you have to sort of adjust it when you hang it up so that the cherry blossoms are facing front.

I bought this for my asian themed bedroom. Its a nice addition to the decor, especially if you have colored walls. Because of the white background, it really pops in the room.

Its serves its purpose and looks ok, but it looks slightly cheap and really doesnt go unless you have a Japanese style going through out the room.

I bought these for an asian-themed surprise birthday party for my mom. Along w/ smaller solid red and white lanterns, these looked great and really made our home look perfect for the theme. They are very thin so be careful as you are assembling and hanging them. Otherwise, they are great! I loved the fact that they were red rather then the usual pink.

It arrived all folded in the box and I was let down that it was not as fancy as I hoped. In my opinion it looked a little cheap. HOWEVER....when assembled, hung from my ceiling, and lit; WOW, it brightened the room beautifully. My girls LOVE this lamp. My only concern, its really, really delicate, so hang it so little hands don't tear it. Otherwise, we love it!

So I bought this as a replacement for another cover I had which got destroyed. This looks very nice. It arrived in a package that was kind of beat up so I was worried but it turned out to be fine. The piece of metal you use inside to expand it seemed a bit long, or the lamp was a bit too tight but I finally made it fit. Not much else to say other than it lets out a lot of light since it has a white background, and it looks good.
