5.0 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise
Normally I do not read horror novels, but from the second I picked this book up I could not put it down! I had to know what was going to happen next between Doug Parkerson and Evelene. This book has twists and turns that will keep you guessing and make you think twice. In the end you will love Doug and be glad you read a novel so unique and different from anything you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror with a twist, May 11, 2006
This review is from: Flowers for Evelene (Paperback)
From the very first page the author grabs you and doesn't let go. What a page turner! The descriptive writing makes you feel that you are experiencing every moment. If you are looking to read a horror novel that just keeps you guessing until the very end, you will not be disappointed in this book. Can't wait to read the author's next book (hurry up!!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and fascinating book, January 8, 2012

I Loved this book from the beginning it start so smooth and easy and after the three chapters it makes you keep
turning the page just so you can see what happen next.
Doug is a man who fight his own addiction(Demons) and him self.Evelene is his addiction or demon (depends how you look at it)She kept make him suffer but he keeps coming back to her, and the illusion she create for him even when he knows is not good for him.
In the end like every other addicted person question him self if his strong enough to confront her....

This book its gonna make you question yourself many many times.I would definitely read any other book of this writer, he is on my must read list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, July 23, 2011

I finished the book today. I would have read it in one session had I not been obligated to go to work the next day. This is how good this book is.

Evelene, the undefeated temptress, is Doug's addiction. He suffers from it, and loves it as much as he hates it. He fights it with all the strength he has, finding himself always weaker as she looms over him, trying to make him surrender. And he does surrender. A lot. He sees his life drifting away, and all the efforts he made to get it back on track vanish in an instant. He succumbs to the demons of his past, let them take him over, until he finally feels like he wants to die because he just can't tolerate the pain anymore. But there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, and when he ultimately sees it, his life becomes slowly brighter again.

I absolutely loved the story. The way it is narrated, constructed, the progression in the plot and the final deliverance at the end made it a must re-read for me. It's dark, very dark, as Doug opens up for the reader to see his tortured soul, but his rawness is counterbalanced by his extreme sensitivity. Evelene is cruel but she's so real, it's horrifying to think that she is in Doug's mind and rule his world. A great tale about addiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Transcendent, April 15, 2010
This review is from: Flowers for Evelene (Paperback)
A friend suggested this book and I really had a hard time putting it down. I've never been one for the horror genre in literature, film etc but 'Flowers For Evelene' has that something which can transcend any genre; a great author. Pinto's voice needs to be heard, and I'm personally looking forward to reading more of his work. If you're in search of a suspenseful page turner, this is your book. Please be warned, its not for the faint of heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very captivating and exciting, November 16, 2009

This review is from: Flowers for Evelene (Paperback)
I had ordered this novel with a completely open mind knowing that I did not know much about this author other than his style of writing is what I prefer to read. With that said I will now give you my thoughts....

After reading the first few pages I was hooked, a captive to my favorite reading spot. The angst of Doug immediately made him the underdog as well as the troubled man who needed to be liberated from his deepest and darkest of issues. Every move he made could be compared to someone unknowing of how to cope with issues in their life, the hesitance to talk about it and the unwillingness to reach out for help. You felt Doug spiral out his current self and into this old Doug that had been repressed for so long.

At more than one spot in the book I remember saying aloud, "What are you thinking Doug!!" I wanted him to get the help needed and was so angry with him when he let himself get hooked deeper and deeper into this world of Evelene, this world of self-gratification and masochism.

Eventually, and as happens in some of the best books written, things work out in a way you just don't expect. I can honestly say I envisioned a different ending to this book and was greatly surprised when the last page came and I was left wanting more.

I will be here waiting Mr. Pinto, waiting for your next book to take me into a life I can only read about and visualize through your writing. Hai superato le mie aspettative!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid debut for Joe Pinto, July 4, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flowers for Evelene (Paperback)
Growing up a Stephen King fan, I have always enjoyed a good horror novel. King's influence can definitely be felt in Joseph Pinto's "Flowers for Evelene". Pinto does a great job capturing the emotions of a man trying to overcome his "demons". The character development early on really helps you root for Doug, even as he becomes unlikeable as the story progresses.

Looking at one of the negative reviews, I have to wonder if that person didn't understand that this was supposed to be a horror novel, not an erotic thriller. While the story does have a lot of sex, it definitely is not an erotic thriller. That reviewer also complains about things that I don't remember seeing in the book. There are a couple typos that the editors missed...but in today's society, those mistakes seem to be slipping by editors across the board.

The horror genre is a tough one. It's difficult to truly be original...even Stephen King seems to be rehashing old ideas. While "Evelene" may not break new ground in this genre, it does what a good novel should. It makes you want to keep reading, even though you know you should put the book down and go to bed! I don't get scared by reading novels, so I'm not going to wax poetic about having to sleep with the light on after reading it. But it definitely was an entertaining story.

Is it perfect? No...but to expect Pinto to churn out his version of "It" for his first novel is unrealistic. This was a solid debut for Pinto, who will only get better as he continues to write. Horror fans should give this a shot!

I found this book to be addictive after a few chapters. I needed to know when the main character would get over his addiction. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the book flowed, and how captivating it was once I really got into it. Towards the end, I couldn't put it down. You need to give this book a chance, but once you do, you will find that you become intrigued by it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I WONT FORGET THE FLOWERS, MR. PINTO !, November 3, 2006
This review is from: Flowers for Evelene (Paperback)
Im always looking for new and exciting reads. I have definitely found one in Flowers For Evelene. The author's extremely descriptive writing paints images in your mind that are so real you dont have to think. They materialize before your eyes and place you right in the middle of the story's surroundings. As you continue to flip the pages, without taking a break, you swear that Evelene will be floating round the dark corner of your living room at any moment and you will become her next desire. Flowers For Evelene is a page turner from beginning to end that wont leave you disappointed. Im eagerly awaiting this author's future novels.
